Rocks, Ribs and Ridges at Hidden Valley- Vernon, N.J. - 6/8/2013 Chef Dan Lemire of Chumleys BBQ and Catering of Florida, N.Y. is shown cooking up some ribs at the fourth annual Rock, Ribs and Ridges music and food festival held last weekend at Hidden Valley Resort. Lemire attended the Culinary Institute of America and this year’s ribs were available with a variety of sauces including Root Beer, Fired Up, and Apple Garlic.The event started on Saturday and although the rains had passed they left behind milky skies and plenty of mud that organizers covered with hay spread throughout the concert grounds.

Cub Scouts Camporee at Rickey Farm- Vernon, N.J. - 6/1/2013 Cub Scout Joshua Enberg, 7, of Sparta is shown sailing along the zip line that his Pack 82 members and their parents were in charge of during the weekend long Camporee at the Rickey Farm in Vernon. Over 400 boys signed up for the weekend. Activities included a hike on the Appalachian Trail, BB rifle shooting, archery, rocketry, astronomy lessons and a whole lot more. The event was sponsored by the Patriots’ Path Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Highland Lakes resident Ayden Sibbern, 8, of Vernon Pack 404 is shown on the zip line. Coming down the zip line he alternated between “hands free” and “hold on for your life.”

The Milford Food and Wine Faire took place on Saturday, June 1, 2013. The location of the event was at the historic Hotel Fauchere on Broad Street in Milford, Pennsylvania. Guests got the chance to sample food and wine produced by vineyards and eateries of the Keystone State. The event was put together by the Upstate Wine Country organization and Hotel Fauchere.

Vernon Dog Park Hosts Pet Information Day- Vernon, N.J. - 6/2/2013 Former Vernon Township School Superintendent Tony Macerino of Barry Lakes brought his 10th seeing eye puppy training program dog “Jim” to meet the young ladies of Vernon Girl Scout Troop 94682 during the Pet Information Day held at the Vernon Dog Park. At the end of the day, the girls presented the dog park organizers with a check for $386.51 that represented the earnings from a bake sale that they held at the Walmart in Franklin. The girls also collected cat and dog food that they will donate to the Vernon Township Animal Control Department to help with the cost of caring for the animals in Vernon.

SteppingSTONE Band is holding a Sparta release party for their debut CD "I'll Be Coming Home" on Saturday, June 1st at the St. Moritz Grill & Bar in Sparta from 8:30pm to 12:30am. Singer/Songwriter Ryan Robert Schutz, a lifelong Sparta resident, and the five-member Americana roots band, will be playing their original recordings to local friends and the community. The first CD release party was held at The Dublin Pub in Morristown where the band played to a standing-room-only crowd. Much of the audience sang along as more and more people are beginning to recognize SteppingSTONE original songs, which will only gain momentum when people can take the CD home and listen. With songs like the CD's title track, "I'll Be Coming Home" and the anthem “Get Back Up Again”, the group could find themselves as New Jersey’s next band that working class folks can rally behind. History Buffs visit Lounsberry Hollow Middle School - Vernon, N.J. - 5/17/2013 Buffalo Man Frank Diraimondo of Oakland teaches children at Lounsberry Hollow Middle School about the fine art of building a Native American teepee. At the request of school secretary Barbara Rodriguez, The Advertiser-News paid a visit to the school last Friday to see first-hand how the students become mesmerized by the lessons taught by about two dozen members of the Garden State Black Powder Association as they reenact the early days of the United States and the American Colonies of long ago. This was the sixth time that the group can to share their knowledge at the school. The event was coordinated once again by GSBPA member Henry DiGuilio of Highland Lakes.

Vernon Township High School Culinary Throwdown - Vernon, N.J. - 5/15/2013 Winning team leader Chef Christian Cortes, an employee at Sodexo’s Hillsboro School District facilities brought together winning Vernon Township High School students Cassidy Braico, Jenn Redfern, Jess Rueger, and Ashley Weigel. Their winning menu consisted of Cheesy Cajun turkey potato balls, Stuffed Toquitos rolls made with freshly made sofrito sauce and a blend of fresh veggies and turkey. The meal was topped off with stuffed strawberries for dessert. According to VTHS Chef and Manager Carla Brandt, they received a plaque and the title of “Master of the Culinary Throwdown.”

Mountain Creek Bike Park Opens for Season with Mexican Theme - Vernon, N.J. - 5/4/2013 Biko de Mayo y Cinco de Mayo: This racer combined some pretty diverse head gear last weekend when at long last the mountain bike trails at Mountain Creek reopened for the season. The initial day was scheduled to include a mountain-wide scavenger hunt and a Mexican Hat Dance Foot-Down Challenge complete with Pińata at the resort’s Biergarten outdoor lounge.With a Mexican theme, sombreros were in order for the weekend’s seasonal launch. Following Mountain Creek Bike Park’s opening, the first series of high end races are set for May 18-19 with the Spring Classic Pro GRT. The professional races are scheduled for 3 p.m. on Sunday. Races are to include Downhill & Super D in both Professional and Amateur categories.

Vernon Dog Park Grand Opening - Vernon, N.J. - 5/5/2013 At center is Barbara Green, the president of DOGS (Dog Owners Gathering Society) of Vernon who remarked that the dedication of the group’s volunteers for nearly seven years brought about their “Field of Dreams” with the creation of Vernon’s dog park that is now officially open to the public. According to Green, “Approximately seven years ago a survey was sent out to residents to see how an off-leash dog park would be accepted in Vernon. Comments ranged from, ‘Yes, we’d love one! Are you biased against cats? Don’t raise my taxes.’ A few months later a small group of residents met for the first time to look into the possibility of building a dog park. Would it work? Could we do it? Was there interest? Monthly meetings were then planned, committees formed and the endeavor began. How difficult could it be? It’s a dog park, just put up a fence. Little did we know the nightmares that would invade our dream.”Later this year fundraisers continue and donations are still being accepted. The group will be holding their 7th annual dog wash/nail clipping/micro-chipping event this July. National Day of Prayer at Municipal Center - Vernon, NJ - 5/2/2013 Last Thursday under a deep blue sky some two dozen faithful came together in front of the Vernon Municipal Center to take part in the 62nd Annual National Day of Prayer. Established by an act of Congress in 1952 and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman, the tradition remains to this day. Leading the services in Vernon were Pastor Nik Fontana of the Faith With Love Fellowship at the McAfee Bible Church, Monsignor Robert Carroll of Our Lady of Fatima Church, and Pastor Roger Spence of Christ Community Church, both in Highland Lakes. Those present took turns praying for our governments and institutions ranging from our nation and troops at war to Vernon Township’s governmental leaders. Among the prayers offer by Pastor Fontana were that all present retain a point of view that comes from “compassion” and that our leaders in Washington not be so “party conscious.”

On Sunday, Barry Lakes author Leesa Beckmann (left) brought her Sebastopol goose “Oliver” to Vernon Earthfest 2013. Here Oliver got to meet Glenwood resident Shirley Baldwin.The 13th such annual event was once again held at Heaven Hill Farm on Route 94. The thousands of people who attended could not have asked for a more beautiful day. Although milky clouds slowly arrived later in the day, the five-hour Earth Day celebration began as a warm spring-like day under the pale blue heavens. Among others, the event was sponsored by the Vernon Chamber of Commerce under the direction of coordinator Margaret Kranz of Valley National Bank. Throughout the day presentations were given by numerous organizations including Birds of Prey by the Delaware Raptor Center, Snakes-n-Scales, John Kraft of Lenape Lifeways of Stanhope, and Travis Gale of Eyes of the Wild. Free water testing was also offered by Mike Furrey of Dover-based Agra Environmental & Laboratory Services.

Something’s fishy in Vernon…Nothing beats fishing with Grandpa. Reagan Hamilton, 9, of Vernon enjoyed a morning of fishing with her grandfather Caleb Williams of Shrewsbury, Pa. Last Saturday nearly 150 children and their folks came out for this year’s annual Vernon PAL Fishing Derby. The event was held at the Firemen’s Pavilion Pond, next the Vernon Fire Department on Route 515. Two sessions of fishing allowed the youngsters the chance to catch some 100 trout donated by Vernon’s Double “V” Rod & Gun Club. The largest trout stocked this year measured 22 inches. Additional native fish in the pond include large mouth bass and sunfish, which were the prevalent catch of the day.

Barry Lakes Annual Easter Celebration– Vernon, N.J. – 3/30/2013 Nicholas Ferreri, 7, of Barry Lakes poses with the Easter Bunny. The turnout for the Barry Lakes Easter Party and Egg Hunt broke records this year as well over 100 residents attended the festivities. Rather then hopping along the trails and through the forests of Wawayanda State Park to reach the party, the Easter Bunny arrived via automobile courtesy of Barry Lakes Road Director Carryl Daza. The afternoon included photo ops with the bunny as well as an egg hunt on the lawn in front of the clubhouse. Each plastic egg contained an individually wrapped chocolate surprise.

Lusscroft farm state park held its open house this weekend. Over 400 people attended on Sunday. With the unpredictable weather going from warm to cold, it has extended the harvest season by a week or so. The sap was still flowing despite the icicles forming as it dripped into the buckets. Demonstrations were throughout the day on how to tap the trees, collect the sap and evaporate it into the sweet maple syrup we all love on pancakes.

Mountain Creek Pond Skimming – Vernon, N.J. – 3/10/2013 As the cardinals met at the Vatican to select a new pope, Mountain Creek President Bill Benneyan, dressed up as a cardinal bird as he made the very first attempt — and the day’s very first unsuccessful attempt — to cross the skimming pond during Mountain Creek’s Snowplow Luau Celebration last Sunday. The ski and snowboard season is now winding down although Mountain Creek South remains open.The winners were Chad Stother for Best Skim, Kris Cantos for Best Spill, Caroline Bjorkman for Best Individual Costume, and for Best Group Costume the penguins Nick Rafanelli, William Fiorenzo, and Adam Shamouil.

Vernon seniors want to be your valentine.Al Doczy of the Glenwood section of Vernon speeds his way through another winning game of Nine Ball. A former regional Nine Ball Tournament player with a collection of trophies to prove it, Doczy has since suffered two strokes. He uses the pool tables at the Vernon Senior Center as “stroke therapy” to get his game back to where he wants it to be.Last Thursday, in celebration of St. Valentine’s Day, the Vernon Senior Center opened its doors to about 100 township seniors to help newcomers learn more about what the center has to offer. The day also included an open session of Zumba Gold workouts and yes; there was such a thing as a “free lunch.” The center is open weekdays to all area seniors. Winter Festival 2013 at High Point State Park took place on Saturday, January 26, 2013. High Point State Park is located in Montague, N.J. The Friends of High Point State Park organization sponsored the event inside the High Point State Park Interpretive Center and surrounding park grounds. Activities included ice fishing demonstrations, snowshoeing, guided hike, and crafts for children, storytime, sing-a-long, and hot cocoa by the fire.

TransAM Snowboarding Competition at Mountain Creek – Vernon, N.J. – 01/12/2013 Brandon Schmidt, 20, of Stockholm was the showstopper last Saturday at the TransWorld TransAM Snowboarding Competition held at Mountain Creek. Nearly every jump he took included a crowd-pleasing somersault. Schmidt is being sponsored by Launch Snowboards and is leaving for New Zealand later this week to take part in the Nitro Circus competitions.This year’s TransAM is the 11th of the series. There are eight stops in this year’s series and first place male and female riders automatically qualify to compete in the finals at Park City Mountain Resort in Utah and the first place qualifiers also win airfare to the finals.The names of the winners of Saturday’s event where not available at press time.

Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge Artist's Community Annual Wildlife and Landscape Art Exhibit – Vernon, N.J. – 01/12/2013 At center, artist John Currey of Vernon discusses some of his artwork on display at the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge. On Saturday about a dozen area artists had their opening reception as part of the refuge’s artist’s community. The exhibit will remain open to the public through February 10. Barry Lakes Pancake Breakfast with Santa – Barry Lakes/Vernon, N.J. – 12/15/2012 With the help of Jeff Hansen of the Cliffwood Lake section of Vernon, Santa managed to find his way to the Barry Lakes clubhouse last Saturday for the lake association’s community breakfast.. Although Santa wasn’t too hungry after his trip, over 50 people enjoyed pancakes, gingerbread pancakes, sausage, and generous strips of bacon. Barry Lakes recreation direction Mary Ferreri supervised the volunteer kitchen squad and as they met Santa, each of the children was given a holiday gift.

Our Lady of Fatima church hosts community caroling – Highland Lakes/Vernon, N.J. – 12/08/2012 Kathleen Knop, 8, of Highland Lakes portrays the Virgin Mary during the children’s presentation of The Living Nativity scene.The occasion was on Saturday when Our Lady of Fatima Church on Breakneck Road in Highland Lakes invited the entire community in for a Christmas carol festival and a wide variety of refreshments. Parents with young children were encouraged to come so that the kids could also enjoy arts and crafts and singing that was focused on children.The story Jesus’ birth according to Luke was presented by a group of young children. Keyboardist John Fanelli provided the music for the occasion.

Children put together stuffed teddy bears to be donated to needy children. Teens from Pope John XXIII High School assisted the children. The Pope John students performed the play A Christmas Carol. Bob Winter’s Holiday Display – Vernon, N.J. – 12/2/2012 The man in the some photos is Bob Winter making adjustments to the display. He is a volunteer fireman with the Allendale (Bergen County) Volunteer Fire Department.Bob Winter’s display includes a food donation box. As an estimated 500 families visit his display each season they are encouraged to leave food donations and pet supplies which he brings to the free food pantry in the lobby of the St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church off Route 94 in Vernon. The food he leaves at the food pantry disappears every night as needy families help themselves to the donated items. Toy donations will also be given to children in need.He says that it is not uncommon for families to bring cameras and video equipment with them to take photos of their children.He has been putting up the display for the last 16 years. He begins setting it up immediately after Halloween. It takes a full month to complete the display. The yard is a maze of electrical wires and extension cords and it takes more than five minutes to light and power the entire display.In addition to the nativity scene and many holiday-themed characters, there are two train sets that run continuously. New this year in trains is the Teddy Bear Railroad. There are also free candy canes in the red baskets at the bottom of the driveway for visiting children.Directions to 22 Valley Drive North in the Vernon Valley Lakes/Glenwood section of Vernon: From the intersection of Route 517 and Route 644 (Vernon Crossing Road), take Route 517 north for 1.2 miles and then turn left onto Valley Drive. Take Valley Drive for 0.4 miles. You will head straight and up and over the hill and then follow the road as it curves to the right. At the stop sign, turn left onto Clover Lane. The house is on the next corner on the left side. Turn left onto Valley Drive North. The food donation box is near the street on the left side of the driveway.

Community Choral Society Performance at St. Thomas’ Church – Vernon, N.J. – 12/2/2012 2011 Vernon Senior of the Year Terri Van Emburgh sings during the Community Choral Society’s winter concert, entitled “We All Need a Little Christmas” on Sunday. As Senior of the Year, Van Emburgh’s accomplishments included working for the Salvation Army, her participation as a singer and as the current secretary of the Community Choral Society, and her volunteer work for Saint Clare’s Sussex Hospital and Hospital Auxiliary.The program featured a wide variety contemporary and classic holiday favorites including “Mary, Did You Know,” “Goin’ to Bethlehem,” “All for a Baby” and “Ring the Bells of Christmas” and several more. The concert was held at St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church on Route 94 and included refreshments after the performance. The Community Choral Society is led by director Danielle Kastner and accompanied by Eleanore O’Mara, of Vernon.

Lusscroft farm had their Christmas open house and photo contest this weekend in Wantage.Along with the Christmas decorations and holiday vendors there was a special display.A collection of hand carved wooden Folk Art pieces of animal powered vehicles, carved by Thomas J. Murphy, dirrector of 4-H. The collection was donated in 1999 to the Rutgers New Jersey museum of Agriculture.With the dissolving of the Rutgers museum, Liz Perry and Cece Pattison played a big role in having the collection re-donated back to Lusscroft Farms.The collection can be seen in the Main Manor House hall. A rare four month old baby Yak named Zak was in the barn along with Decker and Aussie, two horses, llamas,rabbits and ducks. Burgers, hot dogs, and chilli was available to keep you warm. A photo contest was also on exibit with the announcing of the winners.Taking best in show and 1st place adult division was Jane H. Rapp of Fredon, Emily Miller of Mt. Arlington for 1st in pre-high school division and Zach Miller with 1st place in the high school division.

Although the focus was on pets and primarily dogs, quite a few family photos included the kids and even some adults too.Repeating his performance of 2012 and dressed in red, was dog lover and Vernon firefighter Guy Kovalcik, who assisted Santa throughout the afternoon.

Vernon Fire Department Photo Op with Santa (People) – Vernon, N.J. – 11/24/2012 Oliver got Santa’s goose, alright…“But Santa, it’s not a duck, it’s a goose; a Sebastopol goose.” Barry Lakes author Leesa Beckmann brought “Oliver the Goose” for photos with Santa and offered her locally oriented books for those who were looking for the perfect holiday gift.. As a fundraiser of the Vernon Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and in turn the fire department, last Saturday firefighter Rob Shirhall took the honors in very personally helping out the merry old elf.Although Santa wasn’t sure what he’d be eating on Christmas Day, Oliver, the star of three of Beckmann’s books, apparently was not on the menu.

Second Annual Vernon Girls’ Softball Fall Classic - Vernon, NJ - 10/28/2012 Natalie Alheidt, 11, proves that Viking spirit was strong during the Second Annual Vernon Girls’ Softball Fall Classic held at Lounsberry Middle School, which was sponsored by the Vernon Girls Softball League.According to game coordinator Margaret Gummere, 16 teams participated in the a three game tournament. There were eight 10U teams and eight 12U teams. Teams traveled from Poughkeepsie, Rockland County, Orange County, and Goshen, N.Y., Warren County, Kinnelon, Lenape, Hillsborough, Mount Olive, Kinnelon, Randolph, and Sparta. Three Vernon travel teams participated.Championship games were played between: 10U Lenape Blazers and Fielder's Choice/Kaboom and 12U NJ Sparks and Warren County Warriors.Fielder’s Choice/Kaboom and the Warren County Warriors won first place in their respective divisions.

The Tuxedo Historical Society launches a three-week exhibition on Monday, Oct. 29, of photographs, artifacts and oral histories of the Tuxedo Park School. The exhibit, which celebrates 113 years of learning, will be staged at the historical society’s offices at 7 Hospital Road, just off Route 17 in Tuxedo. Among the stories to be told are those of the World War II British “war orphans.” Just over 70 years ago, a few dozen of these children came to Tuxedo Park School. They lived at the nearby “Children’s House,” a vacant home that was staffed to accommodate the children taken in by local Park families from British families fearful of the German “Blitz.” Here are just some of the photographs provided by the Tuxedo Park School.

Best in Show for a vintage truck was Hamburg’s Dan Storms for his 1929 Ford Model A.This Saturday’s 5th Annual Veterans Memorial Car, Truck and Bike show held at the Wantage Woodbourne Veterans Memorial Park was a big success. According to organizer Christine Feoranzo, the show is expected to raise about $2,000 and funds will be donated to the VVA Chapter #1002 at the groundbreaking of the Northern New Jersey Veterans Memorial Cemetery to help fund the phase 1 construction.The winners this years of 1st place Best in Show are for Car - Brad Lynch’s 1933 Ford Coupe, for Truck - Dan Storms’ 1929 Ford Model A, and for Bike - Art Frisbie’s Custom Built Chopper.

Twisted Family Tree Indian Summer Concert - Vernon, NJ - 10/06/2012 Keyboardist Joe Biglin of the Jefferson-based Jungle Jazz Initiative performs with cold toes on Saturday at the Twisted Family Tree Productions Indian Summer Concert held at Vernon’s Rickey & Son Farm.Although according to organizer Stephanie Moore, despite various weather-related challenges, by Saturday afternoon some 400 people had arrived at the venue. Between a foreboding forecast with passing showers, strong tent-toppling winds, and a near freezing night, the concerts went on. The profits from last year’s event went to the Nature Conservancy’s “Plant a Billion Trees” campaign and this year’s take went to benefit The World Wildlife Fund and their Save the Tiger Program. Nearly 30 acts performed over the three-day weekend.

Even with the threat of rain and thunderstorms, on Saturday over 225 area family members came to Vernon’s Cherry Ridge Range for a totally free day at the local shooting range. The recurring annual event gives family members the opportunity to experience the shooting sports and see exactly what the Canistear Road facility has to offer.In addition to a comfortable and spacious clubhouse, there are six different outdoor ranges on site. The day’s offerings included the chance for folks to try their hand at a variety of shotguns, rifles and handguns, while under the supervision of 45 nationally certified instructors and volunteer staffers. The Vernon range is owned and maintained by the Association of New Jersey Rifle & Pistol Clubs (ANJRPC). The Association wants area shooting enthusiasts to realize that the annual membership fee for entire families, including parents and youngsters, is less than 60 percent more than an individual adult membership, making it a bargain for families that are watching their budgets. On Sunday afternoon, September 9, Dick Wells and the Jim Perry Band drew a huge crowd for one of the last concerts of the 2012 free summer concert series at Railroad Green sponsored by the Village of Warwick. And once again he received a standing ovation that lasted several minutes. Although the bright sunlight was very welcome after stormy weather the previous day, at least half the people in the audience stationed themselves in the cooler shade across the street.

Saturday evening marked the Hidden Valley Ski Patrol’s first attempt at luring supporters to the gaming tables. With all proceeds going to the patrol for the purchase of training supplies and equipment, guests had the opportunity to try their hand at craps, blackjack, roulette and poker on professional casino tables. If you got lucky while helping a great cause, you had the chance to win some of the tricky tray-type auction prizes that were displayed along the front windows on the main floor of Tavern on the Mountain. Each player started with $200 in “play money” currency. Music for the evening was supplied by composer/guitarist John Sheehan. About 100 lucky-feeling folks attended the fundraiser.

These are photographer Ed Bailey's photos from last Saturday's Cheese Festival in downtown Monroe. By most measures, Saturday’s annual Cheese Festival was a success. Downtown Monroe was crowded with festival-goers of all ages. Entertainment included young people dancing and demonstrating their athletic abilities. Community groups had a chance to tell people how their help and contributions make a difference. The one drawback was the cancellation of the 2012 Monroe Idol Competition due to severe weather. But festival organizers say the popular competition will be held at Smith Clove Park very soon. What else can be said other than it was a “cheesetastic day.”

Minerals Resort Luau - Vernon, NJ - 09/01/2012 On Saturday, grass skirts and Hawaiian garb kept the children busy during the Labor Day weekend luau held at Minerals Resort & Spa. About 500 enjoyed a buffet style feast that included roasted pig, “lomi lomi” salmon, crab salad, Hawaiian style poke, grilled chicken, ribs, and an assortment of tropical fruit. The evening also included professional dancers and the Island Breeze Band.

It's a family affair. Eleanor, Martin and Jon Larsen of Wantage share the same hobby. They all do Fire Poi and torch juggling. Eleanor Larsen, although leagally blind has been demonstrating fire poi over 8 years. Larsen stated that spinning and dance moves are an art form that comes from the Moari women. Poi was first used for combat and strength training and slowly turned into a dance of beauty and art form. The Larsen family gave a demonstration of the art at a friends house in Wantage on wednesday evening.

Last Wednesday, June 20, Mountain Creek Waterpark used the first day of summer to mix H2O with 90-plus degree heat. Now the daily summer operation is going full throttle.Although no new heat records were set locally, with last Wednesday and Thursday well over the 90-degree mark, Friday brought severe thunderstorms that resulted in broad power outages and lightning damage throughout the area.The balance of the weekend, Saturday and Sunday, brought pleasant temperatures and the chance to give the A/C a well-deserved rest. On Saturday May 5th the Sussex County Historical Society sponsored a Day of History at Sussex Community College. Re-enactors from the 27th and 15th Regiments of the New Jersey Veteran Volunteers were on hand with information about the role Sussex County and surrounding area Veterans played during the Civil War. Visitors were also given ballots to select the next President of the United States. Abraham Lincoln or George B McClellan. Re-enactors included Jeff Chandler (1st Sergeant), Alan Deliman (private-paymaster), Big Ray Veron (Gambler), and John Covert (captain).

The Village at Lafayette. It was a day of fun festivities that included music, artists, mimes, a parade and of course poodles! The Sussex County Arts & Heritage Council under the director Mary Jo Mathial from Byram organized a photo competition with Century Link as the sponsor. Trevor Hoddgson served as chair person for the event. Winners were announced at the Sussex County Court House on tuesday night. 1st. place winner went to Kathy Brennan Hughes of Hampton. Hughes photo will be on the Century Link county phone book and a 200.00 cash prize. 2nd place went to Daniel Baumgartner of Sparta. Baumgartner gets the cover of the Sparta Century Link small phone book and cash prize of 100.00. Four honorable mentions were also picked as follows, Paul Michael Kane of Ogdensburg, Craig Haveman of Fredon, Daniel Baumgartner of Sparta and Elizabeth Albert Wallace of Fredon.

These photographs were contributed by community members through the efforts of Bob Curtis: Several accomplished Monroe-Woodbury alumni music students, an inspirational former teacher and current high school band members joined together with The West Point Concert Band last Saturday for a most magical night. Picture the dramatic final scene of Mr. Holland’s Opus, with former band students returning to their high school to honor the retirement of their beloved music teacher. Part reunion, part homecoming, this community celebration of music had the audience on its feet numerous times during a palpably emotional and awe-inspiring program. The concert was conducted by former Monroe-Woodbury band director Dr. John Patrick Lynch, currently director of bands at the University of Georgia. Additionally, the West Point Band welcomed M-W alumnus Mike Tiscione of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra as guest trumpet soloist. And to add to the emotional evening, M-W graduate and West Point Band clarinetist Sgt. 1st Class Diana Cassar-Uhl, also a former student of Lynch, was performing for the last time with the band before pursuing a new career in the field of maternal and child health.

These are Louise Hutchison's photos of the cast of "Cats," the spring production of the Warwick Valley High School Drama Club. Under the direction of faculty member Nick DiLeo, the Warwick Valley High School Drama Club presented the musical “Cats” to sold-out crowds on March 16-17. With its elaborate costumes, makeup and set, “Cats” was an impressive production thanks to the work of the large and talented cast and crew. The makeup was done by Warwick makeup artist Lucia Aloi and assistants. “Cats” follows the story of the Jellicle cats as they decide which one will be chosen to go to the ethereal Heavyside Layer. The 50 feline denizens of the “Cats” junkyard included the Rum Tug Tugger, Grizabella, Old Deuteronomy, Mongojerrie, Rumpleteazer and many others. The musical is based on T.S. Eliot’s “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats,”and features a moving Andrew Lloyd Webber score.

Barry Lakes Annual Cabin Fever Dinner Dance – Vernon, NJ – 2/25/2012 With a Mardi Gras theme, this was the main stage area at the Barry Lakes Annual Cabin Fever Dinner Dance. Nearly 150 residents attended. Dinner was catered by Milano Ristoranté of Hardyston. There was plenty of food that included Shrimp Scampi, Chicken Francese, thinly sliced rare steak, fresh vegetables, and numerous pasta dishes.

Vernon Peak during the 2012 Tubbs Romp to Stomp Out Breast Cancer Snowshoe Series held at Mountain Creek Ski Resort in Vernon. Benefiting the North Jersey Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the event drew 394 participants despite the miserable weather and slippery roads.

While many talk about weather when trying to strike up a conversation, WABC-TV Senior Meterologist Bill Evans has been telling tri-state residents about the latest weather happenings on Channel 7 Eyewitness News for the past 24 years. "I absolutely love weather," Evans said when visiting a group of meteorology students, and members of the public at an appearance at Sussex County Community College on Dec. 19. Evans joked with the audience that he is a "weather nerd", and said he rises daily at 2am to begin tracking the weather, then trek to Manhattan from his home in Connecticut to broadcast his findings and forecast on television, as well as the radio, the internet, WABC's website, and online. Evans said he spends his afternoons book writing once he wraps his workday at 1pm, then spends time with his wife Dana and four children, and coaches baseball or football for his children. A big storm, can keep Evans away from his family for 16 to 18 hours at a clip in the studio, or, he said, he is able to do some radio broadcasts at home during severe storms, in between snowball fights and sledding with his kids. During his visit at Sussex County Community College, Evans toted copies of his latest book, 'Dry Ice' for sale, and locals who attended chatted with Evans as he signed their books. He penned the book with Marianna Jameson, as well as 'Category 7: The Biggest Storm in History' and 'Frozen Fire'. Evans' book, 'It's Raining Fish and Spiders', a childrens' book about weather, will be released in Spring 2012, and 'Blackmail Earth', a thriller tale of weather terrorism, is scheduled for June 2012. Director of Communications at Sussex County Community College, and broadcast meteorologist and professor Tony Selimo, coordinated Evans' visit to the college and, helped to field audience questions during the event. Evans said he considers his work that of a public servant. "The thing about weather is you're helping people," Evans said. "I tell people what to wear, and, if a hurricane is coming." Evans said he is "busier than he's ever been", in his 37th year of his career. After arriving daily to the WABC-TV studios, he also tapes updates for stations like WPLJ radio, digital cable, ESPN, Martha Stewart, and the New York Stock Exchange. Evans told the audience he predicts a very wet winter ahead this year. "There's a lot of moisture around here," said Evans, especially after the heavy rains in August and September. Evans gave examples about the devastation of hurricanes in New York City history, including the complete destruction of Hog Island off of Long Island from a Category 2 Hurricane in 1893. It is the only case in history of an island removed completely by a storm. Evans expressed his concern about the apathy when it comes to hurricanes in the northeast. He said a Category 1 hurricane in the north can equate to a the devastation caused by a Category 2 storm in the south. "You can shovel 30" of snow, you can't shovel the ocean," Evans cautioned.

Students involved with the Pope John Players from Pope John XXIII Regional High School, presented the two-act play,'A Few Good Men' at shows Wednesday, December 7 through Saturday, December 10. Their performances were dedicated to Pope John Military Alumni, and, at the start of each performance, students read off names of Pope John's Military Alumni from 1960, through the present day. "I am in awe of these kids," said director Jacki Burt. "They are a fantastic cast, and work well together. What also impressed Birk was the amount of dialogue the cast memorized, and, their immersion in adult military roles, which Burt said is a challenge for adult players. "It's great, you learn to work together, and to work closely as friends, it's just a big family," said Erik Massenzio, who played LTJG Sam Weinberg in the show. What moved the students the most was meeting the family of 1963 graduate Paul Madden at their Friday evening performance. Madden died while serving in Vietnam. "I think what we did last night was an honor," said Matthew Iuliani on Saturday, who played LCpl Harold Dawson, a member of the military accused of murder. "It was humbling," added Massenzio. The group's Wednesday afternoon performance was a Senior Citizen Benefit Performance, and, also in memory of victims of Pearl Harbor, on the same day as the 70th anniversary on the attack of Pearl Harbor. On the Friday when Madden's family attended, a special reception for military personnel followed. Aaron Sorkin wrote 'A Few Good Men', which was first performed in New York in 1989. Hollywood came out with the movie version in 1992, which snagged numerous Academy Awards and Golden Globe nominations. The all-star film cast included: Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson, Demi Moore, Kevin Bacon, Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Pollak, J.T. Walsh, and Cuba Gooding, Jr. The students said they were inspired by the film characters, and, borrowed some of their mannerisms for their roles, yet put their own twists into their portrayals. Murder and mystery are on the menu for the classic comedy, "Arsenic & Old Lace", to be performed at Sparta High School on Thursday December 8, Friday December 9, and, and Saturday December 10. "It's been a lot of fun," said Victoria Reed, an English and Drama teacher at the school, who has worked with the double cast of students. Each cast of students will appear in two performances, and range from Freshmen to Seniors. The play was written in 1939 by Joseph Kesserlring, with the first show in New York City in 1941, with a film adaptation starring Cary Grant in 1944. Reed said the drama/comedy has been in rehearsal since September, and has been a challenge for the students, due to the amount of dialogue. Set in Brooklyn, the plot circles around Mortimer Brewster, a theater critic, ready to marry his love, Elaine. At the same time, he contends with the activities of his murderous brother, Jonathan, and the antics of brother, Teddy, who believes he is Teddy Roosevelt. His spinster aunts Abby and Martha add to the mix, with the cure they provide to ease the loneliness of solitary elderly gentlemen, by serving up a concoction of elderberry wine mixed with arsenic, strychnine and cyanide for them. The cast includes: Eric Loverro and Danny Duffy (Mortimer Brewster), Emily Hand and Kim Bollard (Abby Brewster), Christy Smetana and Lizzie Buback (Martha Brewster), Justine Collins and Lauren Murphy (Elaine Harper), Dillon Feldman and CJ Doyle (Jonathan Brewster), Jack Ryan and Jamie Lowenstein (Teddy Brewster), Spencer Law and Lukas Baumgartner (Dr. Einstein), Kayla Bolger and Angelique Donati (Officer O'Hara), Max Alben and Connor Nelms (Lieutenant Rooney), Alex Muino (Officer Brophy), Laura Silverio and Lexus Ingala (Officer Klein), Jamie Lowenstein and Dillon Feldman (Reverend Dr. Harper), Leanna Bernstein (Mrs. Witherspoon), and Haley Barna (Mrs. Gibbs). Common Thread artists Christmas Show and sale was held Nov. 19.2011 in Wantage Township, n.j. A collection of 12 artists got together with items from unique jewelry and birdhouses to fine art and photos. The artists were: Chris Aidala, Corine Barton, Maureen Bodnar, Ricky Boscarino, Diana Card, Wayne Card, Debby D'Aries, Jeanie Eberhardt, Greg Hicho, Claude Larson, Bruce Ringier and Agnes Rizzo. Cars lined the quiet road in Wantage at 10;00a.m. on saturday when the doors opened to the man cave/ workshop and studio for the art sale. Shoppers were ready to start their Christmas shopping with all the handmade one of a kind items that filled the room. Coffee, cider and freshly baked cookies were served toall.

The VTHS Orchestra held a side by side workshop along with the New Jersey Symphonhy Orchestra on Friday at the Sussex Vo Tech school. Students filled the auditorium to watch and hear the two orchestras mesh their talents together. Each student from the VTHS orchestra had a member of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra sit next to them on stage as a mentor. They were guided through the music with tips on how to play certain notes with emphasis on them to holding their instruments correctly. Jennifer Krott is the director of Vernon Twp. HS Orchestra.

The Kateri Kapers variety show has returned to feature entertaining community talent again this year. Feet will be tapping, hands will be clapping, and parodies perfectly performed. With roots dating back to the Victorian era of stage shows there will be song, dance, magic, and comedy on Friday and Saturday nights that promise to be uproarious fun for all. There are twenty-two scheduled acts for the ninth season of this event, billed as "The Singing, Swinging Saints & Sinners of Blessed Kateri". Parish members as well as local area residents will be performing. The show will run this weekend on Friday the 18th and Saturday the 19th of November at 7:15pm in McKenna Hall at the Rev. Brown School, 294 Newton Sparta Rd, Sparta, NJ. All proceeds will go towards the general funds and community efforts of the Blessed Kateri R.C. Parish. All guests must be 21 years of age or older. Winners of the Sussex County's Sunshine Sunflower Photo Contest were announced for the on-line and print divisions. The viewing was held at Brodheckers Farm at 2 Branchville-Lawson Rd. Neweton.First place winners took home a 25 lb. bag of black oil sunflower seeds grown on the farm, Brodhecker Farm raised frozen chicken, organic honey body cream and a jar of honey. What can be sweeter than that. Naturally Sussex and Brodhecker Farms ran the first sunflower photo contest bringing awareness to sunflowers and the many products they produce from them. The print entries can be viewed at the farm until Dec. when they will be displayed at schools, hospitals and nursing homes in the area. The on line entries can be viewed at www.naturallysussex.com. "This chapter of my life is all about me," said Cheryl Caruso, one of the stars of the hit show, "I Married A Mobster", who signed autographed photos, and bottles of Talero Tequila at Burke's Wine and Liquors in Sparta on October 14. Caruso, who has a background in the spirits, hospitality, and nightclub industries is a partner in marketing the organic tequila. Caruso is most known for her role on Investigation Discovery on "I Married A Mobster", and is one of eight women who tells her story about life as a mob-wife. Caruso said she had no idea her husband, Phil, aka "Philly" was part of the mob. She soon discovered her husband was a whole different man than she initially married, and was leading a double life. "I went into something totally blindsided," she recalled. While her husband was in jail for racketeering and drug-dealing charges, Caruso ended up raising their two daughters on her own by holding down three jobs. Her youngest daughter started her first year of college. "I Married A Mobster" will go into its second season, with a reunion between the mob wives who, off camera, have bonded, and formed friendships with one another.

Breathing Room Center LLC and the Pahaquarry Foundation, Inc presented an afternoon of peaceful watercolor painting outside the idyllic grounds that surround Breathing Room Center to benefit the residents of Bristol Glen in Newton, NJ. All were welcomed to participate in the event "Paint a Smile" to paint the historic barns or the lush gardens surrounding the property, which backs up to the nature conservancy. Little ones painted a banner for Bristol Glen. An artist's reception will follow at a later date and participants will be able to see their matted artwork brightening the halls of Bristol Glen.

Pumpkin painting and picking, hayrides, navigating through hay mazes, carriage rides, an apple pie making contest, horseshoe competition, games, sprint races, indulging in a variety of foods, live music, and browsing through an array of vendors, was on the agenda at the Stillwater Fall Festival on Saturday, September 24. At the end of the day, awards were given for the best apple pies. Laurie Gordon, Ashlee Bickhardt, and Milly Rice were the top three chosen, and each received prizes. Children also participated in the sprint races following the awards for the apple pie contests, and the top three were given prizes in the categories for the ages six and under group, and seven to 12 group.

Locals gathered to celebrate and raise funds for the Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice at the 27th Annual Wine & Cheese Festival at Water Wheel Farm in Fredon on Sunday, September 18. The lineup for the annual fundraising event included the wine tasting, live music, an antique car exhibit, a 50/50 drawing, and live and silent auctions. There were 19 separate stations where participants could sample an average of six different wines at each, while enjoying the grounds of Water Wheel Farm. "It's been a beautiful day," said Randy Burke of Burke's Wine & Liquors in Sparta. "People have had a wonderful time trying the older vintages." What differed at this event versus those in the past, was the announcement of the plans that the hospice has planned to open a facility overlooking the grounds of Water Wheel Farm. A sign was placed leading down to the event, where the facility will be built. The planned hospice building on nine-acres of land will house 10 private rooms, a kitchen, family room, meditation room, children's play room, and butterfly garden. "We've provided an excellent service," said Julia Quinlan, President and Co-founder of the Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice. "The environment will be peaceful, and safe. We're very excited about it. We will be there to support them in any way, and to support their needs." Quinlan said the group needs to raise $5 million to build the hospice facility. The non-profit Karen Ann Quinlan Memorial Foundation provides hospice, bereavement and home health care services, and adult and children's support groups.

People, music, and the aroma of gourmet cuisine filled Newton's Spring Street on Monday, September 12, for their 10th Annual "A Taste of Newton" event. Hosted by the Greater Newton Chamber of Commerce to raise money for their scholarship and decorating funds, 28 local eateries gathered to serve up items, from cheeses, soups, appetizers, entrees, and decadent desserts and drinks. The event goers sat and enjoyed their meals at tables along Spring Street, while also browsing the shops, and listening to the sounds of the band, "Unsung Heroes". The Newton Theatre celebrated its grand opening night on Friday, September 9, with a sold out performance by Todd Rundgren. The crowd excitedly packed into the 670 seats, waiting for Rundgren to come out. He briefly entered in from the side door before the show, and waited back stage. The crowd went wild. Cathy Carney, and Jane Annunziata from Vernon, had front row seats. "For us, there's a great concert in Newton, so we said, 'let's go,'" Carney contributed. Jonathan "JP" Peirce, one of the theater owners, thanked partner Paul Larena for bringing the project to life. Peirce also thanked Town Manager Tom Russo, and former Mayor Kristi Becker, who were both instrumental in bringing plans together. Peirce said many volunteers came forward to help with the theater's rehabilitation, and he thanked them all. He also recognized the support of his girlfriend, Nancy Kulpinksi, then surprised both Kulpinski and the entire audience, by going down on bended knee onstage to propose to her. "She said 'yes!'" Peirce exclaimed, as Kulpinski and Peirce hugged onstage. Rundgren, who played his greatest hits, was accompanied onstage with musicians Kasim Sultan, Prairie Prince, and Jesse Gress. The next day, the group The Motels, performed onstage, to round off the kickoff weekend. Other upcoming performances for September: Scott Henderson, Jeff Berlin, and Mike Clark on September 15, Solas on September 23, and Big Apple Comedy Club I on September 24. One of the good ol' boys came back to town when John Schneider visited Franklin Sussex Auto Mall on Saturday, August 13 for New Jersey's Hazzard County Fair, hosted by the auto mall. Schneider signed autographs for fans throughout the day, and then was one of the judges of the Daisy Duke Look-A-Like Contest. There were General Lee's, and Sheriffs' cars on display for the fans to enjoy, as well as music, and a free barbecue. "John is probably one of the nicest guys I've dealt with," said Bill Snouffer, General Manager. "He is down-to-earth, a great guy. He's one of us." Schneider has been to Franklin Sussex Auto Mall for similar events in the past, with his last visit in 2009. "It's good to be here," Schneider said. It's my third time here, I'd like to come back." While visiting Sussex County, Schneider told the audience during a question and answer session, he spent time at Crystal Springs, and Snouffer said the two also played golf in Panther Valley. Schneider said he plans to return for a visit to Crystal Springs with his wife, where she can enjoy the spa, and he can play golf. Schneider additionally told fans he was proud to be part of shows like "The Dukes of Hazzard" and "Smallville", which have a growing base of fans each year. In addition to a still vibrant acting career, Schneider is a spokesperson for Beach Body, having lost 26 pounds with the P90X workout plan, and Shakeology nutritional shakes. Members of Schneider's business team, "Team Ripped Duke", joined him for the event. "I have always worked out," Schneider said. A fan asked if he did the stunts on "The Dukes of Hazzard". "I did all of the fights, and driving, but none of the jumps," Schneider said. "You never know when a car is going to land on its top. We had the best team of stunt men and women." Schneider said he stays in touch regularly with co-stars Tom Wopat, and Catherine Bach, and was going to see Bach at another "Dukes" event the next day in Virginia. There were 11 contestants in the Daisy Duke Look-A-Like Contest, and 6 small girls who entered the youth portion of the contest. Caitlyn Van Sweden of Wantage won the title of all the little girls, and took home a Wii as her prize. Chelc Scymanski of Newton the second runner-up in the adult contest won an Xbox 360, Brigid Rosendale of Hardyston, the runner-up won an HP TouchPad, and grand prize winner Kristin Kimball of Sussex won a 47" LCD HDTV.
