Mountain Creek Spring Classic - Vernon, N.J. - 5/19/2013 Local Pro Racer George Ryan of Vernon is shown airborne during Sunday’s professional racing circuit held at Mountain Creek. Ryan placed 7th in a field of the 55 racers in the men’s professional division. Last weekend the Mountain Creek Spring Classic brought in racers from as far away as New Zealand with hundreds of racers in the various competitions.

The First Lego League (FLL) Robotics Team at Sparta Middle School competed in The Tiger’s Cup, FLL’s Qualifying Competition, on Saturday, December 1 at Lafayette Township School. Sparta Middle School had four teams -- two grade 6 teams, one grade 7, and one grade 8 -- sparticipating in the all-day affair. The 2012 theme was Senior Solutions. Judges scored the teams in various events, such as Robot Design and Core Values, as the students presented their innovative ideas to solve problems that senior citizens experience in everyday life. One of the Sparta Middle School 7th grade teams (The Magnificent Seven) won a trophy for achieving the highest score in the Robot Performance category.

After a 7-1 record in the regular season and advancing to the NJYFL football playoffs, the Kittatinny Super Pee Wee Silver team (which is comprised of 5th & 6th graders) won their first round playoff game against Sparta Super Pee Wee Silver on Sunday 36-0. They now face an undefeated High Point team in the quarter finals to be played on Saturday November 12, 2011 in High Point.

Saturday, May 7 turned out to be a near perfect day as about 150 youngsters along with their parents or grandparents enjoyed comfortable temperatures, blue skies and a morning of fishing in a creek well stocked with trout. Thanks to an annual community service provided by the Warwick Valley Rod & Gun Club families enjoyed another opportunity to “Take a Kid Fishing Day.”

Newton Merriam Avenue School students, teachers, and staff, showed their school spirit and enthusiasm for the return of Back to Football Friday, a nationwide program sponsored by Play 60 of the NFL. Merriam Avenue School was one of 34 schools in the nation that participated in the event on Friday, September 17. The goal was to show the most school spirit, by either wearing a favorite football jersey, or the school colors of maroon, white and grey. At the end of the day students in the second through fifth grade classes poured into the gym for a boisterous pep rally led by Ray Stocker, the school's band teacher. Stocker led the crowd of students in various cheers and events. He was joined by Newton Braves Cheerleaders from the Merriam Avenue School and special guests from Newton High School. Part of the programs purpose is to focus on fitness, healthy eating, discipline in school and sports, and teamwork. "You are doing an excellent job at being healthy and respectful," said Karen Perez, principal. Kayla Sumski, a junior at the High School and member of the Varsity Cheering Squad told the students, "One of the most important things with being on a team is getting along with people." Amy Mistry, also a junior and member of the Cheerleading Team offered, "Join clubs, don't be bored, and hang out with good people who do fun things." Ben Cramer, a freshman football player who started playing in the third grade said, "Exercise, eat healthy and keep your grades up." Casey Thomas, the starting quarterback for Newton's freshman football team said, "Listen to your teachers, start now so you can be good in high school." The Merriam Avenue School PTO sponsored the event, and will submit photos to the NFL Play 60 Super Schools Program to show their team spirit. The winning school is awarded a $10,000 health and wellness grant from the organization, and a visit from an NFL Player.

The game was filled with lots of fun for the boys at their first game and all the cheerleaders! Quarterback Shane Nelson threw 2 passes for scoring touchdowns to Bryce Manser and Jesse Burrini. The annual KMFL Cougar Pep Rally was held at Lodestar Park on Saturday August 28th from 4-8 pm... It was attended by many local families from the Kittatinny sending district from Fredon, Hampton, Stillwater and Sandyston. There was a local band, good food and fun events for the kids. Along with the annual Cougar Pride Pep Rally which introduced all of the local boys for football and the local girls for cheering. It was a fun event for all involved and the Cougar Spirit was full of excitement for the 2010 season!

Sparta Girl's Tennis Fundraiser Tournament was held on August 28th and 29th at the Lakeside Tennis Club at the Cruiser Club in Sparta. It was a women's doubles tournament for women of all ages and all proceeds went to the Sparta Girl's Tennis Team. It was a 2010 High School Girls Tennis Team Fundraiser and it was made possible by many generous donations. The courts were donated by the owner Mike Clarke from the Lakeside Tennis/Cruiser Club and Anne Lyons the tennis director of Lakeside Tennis organized the event. The tournament winners were presented with a prize from J. Thomas Jewelers of Sparta. There was also enough prizes to hold a raffle from many local businesses such as Tweed, Sparta Theater, Casa Mia, The Pizza Place, Cafe Pierrot, Sparta Book Store, Mohawk Bagel and some other businesses in the area such as Kelley Merwin at Sports MAC, Randolph Tennis Club, Starbucks in Rockaway and International Salon. There was also a bake sale that was organized by parents and students.

"In their inaugural season, the Kittatinny Cougars 9U Travel Team had a great season. The Cougars finished third in the Cerbo League and qualified for the playoffs, they defeated Rockaway Twp. in the first round of the playoffs and then lost to Mendham in the second round to end a great season against very good competition. The Cougars finished in first place in their division in the Off The Bench Sports League to earn home playoff games against Lincoln Park and Jefferson Twp. which the home field advantage paid off with victories to earn the Cougars a birth in the Championship game against Sparta. The Cougars were defeated by the Sparta Bulldogs in the Championship game but the boys gained valuable experience they will never forget.

Chosing an outfit for school or work is one of the hardest decisions some people have to make in the morning, but figuring out what to wear for gym class is easy, shorts or sweatpants, a t-shirt and sneakers! "I did have to change for gym class" both Jen Simonsen and Al Holtzer admitted, "really, it's just for hygenic purposes." Jen, who has been working for the Delaware Valley School District for 9 years in the physical education department says "both genders are equally competative when it comes to sports but I would have to say that women are more agressive when it comes to certain sports, such as women's soccer." Delaware Valley has had its share of female driven sports such as LaCrosse and girls basketball and the style of uniforms have changed over the years. "I have been teaching for 30 years" stated Al Holtzer, "The trends are more fitness based as opposed to when I first came here, trying to get the kids involved in a more wide variety of life long activities." There's no question it has been harder to stimuate the kids with the influence of video games, it's been much more difficult to get students to participate, "Thankfully there hasn't been a decline in the after school sports activities, in my opinion males are more competative but not by a lot and both males and females are equally agressive." So there's a difference of opinion when it comes to who plays the game with more ferocity, but one thing that is not disputed is that the uniforms change as the seasons do. This is true for cheerleading, basketball and most sports played at DV. In fact, in 1978 soccer was called European Football. "There's been a consistency in the passing numbers of the Presiden't Fitness challenge and we've been testing the students at least three times per year. I have seen a change in the popularity of some sports over the years, such as raquetball and table tennis, now weight training and Wii Fit is more popular and I recommend that game for students to utilize over the summer."

The Kittatinny Cougars 9U Travel Team is named after the High School. This is a team not affiliated with Little League, the team is funded by the parents and coaches. 9U means- 9 years old and under. This is the first season as a team. The team plays in two leagues: "Off The Bench Sports League" which is out of Sparta, NJ and the "Cerbo Baseball League" out of Montville, NJ. This is the first year they have played together and they have finished in first place in the Off The Bench Sports with a 8-1-1 record and they have finished in third place in the Cerbo League with a 7-3 record. They have qualified for the playoffs in both leagues with guaranteed home games this coming Sunday 6/6/10. The goals are to teach the boys the game of baseball at a competitive level while having fun doing so for the future of Kittatinny Baseball.

These are photographer Ed Bailey's photos from Woodbury Pack 148's annual Pinewood Derby. More than 40 scouts from Woodbury Pack 148 participated in their annual Pinewood Derby, held Jan. 23 at Monroe-Woodbury High School cafeteria. The five-ounce pinewood cars race at speeds of up to 250 mph along a 40-foot long computer controlled ramp.Cub Scouts, with the help of parents, build their own cars from wood, usually from kits containing a block of pine, plastic wheels and metal axles. The pinewood derby was selected as part of “America’s 100 Best” in 2006 as “a celebrated rite of spring” by Reader’s Digest. The first pinewood derby was held on May 15, 1953, in Manhattan Beach, California by Pack 280. The cubmaster’s son was too young to participate in the popular Soap Box Derby races, so he came up with the idea of racing miniature wood cars. The cars had the same gravity-powered concept as the full-size Soap Box Derby cars, but were much smaller and easier to build.

The third annual Jim Wallace Basketball Camp, held in Ogdensburg, was the biggest ever with approximately 45 children attending. Event chairman Joe Byrne, volunteers and camp guests, working in coordination with the Ogdensburg Recreation Association, ran the four day long event. “I like to encourage children to have fun and enjoy themselves,” said Byrne. Byrne who plays basketball for Nyack College is studying education with a stress on mathematics. He has already filled in as a substitute teacher this past spring.

The annual “Take a Kid Fishing Day, ” sponsored by the Warwick Valley Rod & Gun Club, took place on Saturday, May 2. Members of the Warwick Valley Rod & Gun Club, incorporated in 1945, stocked the picturesque Wawayanda Creek on Baird Farm with trout.

The Vernon Girls Softball league kicked off their season on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at Maple Grange Park. It began with a banner parade of the 20 teams followed with a barbeque, potatoe sack races, horse shoe games, 3 legged races and warm sunshine all around.
