Byram Boy Scout Pack 276 continues a 23-year old tradition this year with their annual Holiday Giving Tree project.

From now until December 13th, the public can help the scouts give to families in need by stopping in Classic Bagel & Deli on Rt. 206 in Stanhope or at Salt Gastropub on Rt. 206 in Byram. Each location has a tree adorned with a combined total of 400 ornaments that the scouts made by hand. A full staff will be doing its part to help "cut out breast cancer one snip at a time" on Sunday October 28th, 2012. The salon's call to action is to come together in remembrance of all who have been affected by breast cancer and for those who are still battling the deadly disease.

This year's goal is to double that amount raised last year by providing a festive atmosphere and delivering superb cuts and styles. The team of stylists will be working to raise money on behalf of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization. The cost is $30.00 for men, women, or children and 100% of the proceeds will be donated.

Armed with a full staff of scissor-ready stylists and plenty of chairs, the salon will be ready for the challenge. 'Walk-in' customers will recieve haircuts at the salon on a first come, first served basis.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month with fundraisers being held worldwide to support education and awareness, ensure and improve quality care, and help further research to find the cure for breast cancer. So whether you have been diagnosed, know someone who has, or just want to make a difference, friends, families, and area residents are welcomed to come together to take part in the Cut-A-Thon.

Your Salon is located in the Byram Shoprite Plaza on Route 206 in Byram, NJ. For more information or directions, call the shop at 973-691-8800.
4 photo(s)
10/9/2012
Album ID: 1547341

President of the senior club, John Degutis stated that this is a yearly event for their club. Every month there is a different activity for the seniors. Last month was a pig roast. The ice cream was a hit with the recent hot weather and everyone had a turn in creating their own sundae.
13 photo(s)
7/19/2012
Album ID: 1504594

Nicknamed "Stars and Stripes", "Old Glory", and "The Star-Spangled Banner", the flag of the United States is a symbol of our nation. It reaches across every state and embraces the old and the young, the rich and the poor. It does not distinguish one religion or race from another. It represents us all and is the one symbol that every American can call their “own”. It signifies our freedom and struggles and sacrifices that it takes to maintain that freedom.

For a few hours on Monday, the swim towels and goggles were left at the door, the hamburger patties and potato salad put down, and lawn work left for later as residents came out to honor those who lost their lives protecting our country and those who served the community.

In the morning on Memorial Day, a ceremony at Byram's Veterans Memorial at the Roseville School House honored veterans of war.
Judge Richard Bowe reminded the audience of the shocking statistics that resulted from the Viet Nam war and Mayor Oscovitch referred to Lincoln's Gettysburg Address correlating its significance in todays world. Members of Byram's Police Department stood aside residents in the audience and members from the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts tended to the lowering and raising of the flags.

Afterwards, the group dispersed to join other parade-watchers along the route on Rt 206. Starting at the Byram Fire Station and proceeding to the Adam Todd Restaurant, the Lenape Marching Patriots led the way.

Among those taking part in the parade were four very special men from the area who received applause from the crowd that lined the half mile stretch; Marines Sgt Tim Carkhuff, who grew up in Byram and has served two tours (Iraq and Afghanistan), 1st Class Cadet at West Point, Robert Parker of Hillsborough, NJ, whose family has a summer house on Cranberry Lake, and Merchant Marine Academy Cadets Timothy Llull of Havertown, Pa and Thomas Healy of Byram. All four gentlemen waved, shook hands, and accepted "thank you's" that were readily offered throughout the event.

At the end of the route all gathered around the Cranberry Lake Club House, as Richard Bowe and Mayor Oscovitch once again addressed the larger crowd, both with the same heart-felt compassion and reverence. Byram Fire Department chaplain, Reverend Mark Smith, provided a brief solemn service before Judge Bowe began the reading of the names of the fallen.

The list began with seven Byram residents that were killed or listed as missing in action while serving in the armed forces. With each name announced came a ring of the bell from Ret Firefighter Bill Vonminden. Following the names of the military heros, were names of residents that have passed who served the community through the fire department, police department, Lakeland Emergency Squad, and Byram FD Ladies Auxiliary. A total of 132 names were read.

The ceremony ended as those who lined the shore, the piers, and the footbridge watched silently as three members of Boy Scout Troop 151 rowed along the shore of Cranberry Lake in a canoe and gently placed a wreath of red, white, and blue into the water as a symbol of remembrance.
60 photo(s)
5/29/2012
Album ID: 1478176

His performance, at times appearing effortless, started with non-traditional flamenco Spanish-styled guitar playing to notable songs like ‘Hocus Pocus’, ‘Eyes Without A Face’, Light My Fire, Have You Ever Loved, The Wind Cries Mary, and of course, Billy Idols top hit ‘Rebel Yell’.

The Sussex County Sheriff's Office visited with the Greater Andover Seniors Club on Feb. 6 to demonstrate the skills of one of the members of their K-9 teams.
Atlas is an 8-year-old 80 pound German Shepherd who was bred in Germany, still responds to German commands, and is part of a unique crime stopping force in Sussex County, as a patrol and narcotics detection canine.
"You can't pet my dog, at the end of the day he is trained to apprehend bad guys," Sheriff's Officer Kieran McMorrow cautioned the seniors during his presentation. McMorrow reemphasized his point by showing them a shredded bite sleeve used during training exercises. "You're very lovely people, he just doesn't know it."
Atlas demonstrated his keen abilities by sniffing out a small bag of marijuana McMorrow planted under a flag stand in the room. When Atlas entered, his demeanor changed, and he was ready to head to the item, quickly detecting it.
Dogs like Atlas are trained to sniff out additional illegal drugs including cocaine, methamphetamines, and heroin.
Atlas is one of three K-9 teams within the Sussex County Sheriff's Office performing different services including search and rescue, and explosives detection.
Atlas and McMorrow completed a four month training program in 2011, covering canine obedience, human tracking, handler protection, and criminal apprehension, in addition to Atlas' specialty field
The members of the seniors club posed numerous questions about Atlas' capabilities and demeanor such as if he lives with McMorrow's family, if so how he reacts at home, and, when a dog's career as a K-9 ends.
"It's really an individual question," McMorrow said, "Some dogs you can't have around your family.
McMorrow said Atlas has a docile personality, yet the moment he sees the stripes on McMorrow's uniform pants, he recognizes it is time to head to work, and, he begins spinning around.
"He's excited, he wants to go to work," McMorrow added.
McMorrow also said a dog stops working on a case-by-case basis, and as long as they are able. Many German Shepherds are plagued by hip dysplasia, which may end a career, and then the dog becomes a family pet.
"The dog may physically tell you, but they still want to work, the heart is still there," said McMorrow.
McMorrow said Atlas has been fed a special diet, and given joint supplements since the age of three.
Atlas has been trained with a "passive indicator" approach, by sitting by the object he was taught to search for. The K-9 dogs with the Sussex County Sheriff's Office may be dispatched to local municipalities by town police departments. Over the last four years, McMorrow said about 75 to 100 arrests have been made due to Atlas' work.
Also in attendance at the presentation were Sussex County Sheriff Mike Strada, Sussex County Undersheriff Keith Armstrong, Andover Township Mayor Michael Lensak, and, Andover Township Committee Member and Greater Andover Senior Citizens Club President, Bob Smith.
"I've made a commitment to protecting the seniors in this community, we're real serious about it," said Strada.
The Sussex County Sheriff's Office is part of TRIAD, which includes the Sussex County Chiefs of Police, and the Division of Senior Services, and helps to reduce criminal victimization to the seniors. Services in the program are: senior citizen police academy, photo ID program, education on particular topics, and distribution of personal emergency ID cards.
10 photo(s)
2/7/2012
Album ID: 1410266

The newly relocated state-of-the-art Andover Animal Hospital celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon cutting with local dignitaries on Jan. 26.

"It was meant to be in Andover Township," said Jill Hummel, practice administrator, of the hospital.

Dr. Harvey Hummel is the third owner of the veterinary practice, which was founded in 1958, but located on Perona Road in Sparta.

When the Hummels saw an opportunity to acquire the 8,000 square foot barn facility on the corner of Newton-Sparta Road and Limecrest Road in Andover Township, they jumped at the chance.

The barn is circa 1910, and had been a milk barn in its heyday, and later, housed a publishing company and furniture store.

"It's an honor and privilege, and I wish you the best of everything," said Mayor Michael Lensak prior to cutting the ribbon to the new animal hospital.

Following the ribbon cutting, the Hummels provided a tour of the facility, and, the event ended with a lunch.

"We went from two exam rooms and 1,800 square feet to five exam rooms, and 8,000 square feet," Harvey Hummel said.

Additionally, the hospital boasts a surgery suite with anesthesia, monitoring system, and a special HVAC system. Also, digital radiography, an in-house lab, a pharmacy, isolation ward, a separate cat ward, a comfort room for euthanasia with its own separate entrance, and a memorial garden.

On the bottom floor of the building is where the veterinary hospital offices are located.

Terwisscha Construction Inc., of Minnesota performed the project, which took over a year and a half to complete.

First Hope Bank assisted with the financing.

"It was a unique project," said Charles Luszcz, commercial lending officer. "We're very happy it turned out this way, it will be a nice addition to the town and community."

"We're so happy to see you've been residents for so long, and you were able to take your business back to Andover," said Vita Thompson, township administrator/clerk.
9 photo(s)
1/29/2012
Album ID: 1404670

Smith said he asked the restaurant if they could attach flyers to their pizza boxes about the benefits of joining the Air Force. Smith has often also stopped by with Air Force personnel for a meal there, and met with potential recruits, some of them who learned of the Air Force recruiting effort from the Villa Capri campaign.
Pete Bovee, the restaurant's manager, accepted the certificate on behalf of Bill Elig, the restaurant owner.
"He really appreciates it," Bovee said. "Bill is all about helping the community."
Elig was, in fact, not available to receive the award that day because he was lending a hand to his church at the time.

Four months following the collapse of the foundation on the Leenstra family home on Limecrest Road in Andover Township, the house has a new lease on life.

The home was relocated from its current location to about 60 feet up the hill on Jan 3.

"The whole thing has been stressful, just getting through this, the stress has really lifted," said Linda Leenstra.

Leenstra's home required separation into pieces. One part of the home was a modular, and one bedroom was stick-built. To lift the stick-built portion took more than six hours. The modular portion, separated into two pieces, took approximately three hours to move.

Linda and Jack Leenstra were able to open their front door, and, peer out from the home's new location, yet the work is far from done. The home will need a new floor and the electric and water lines rerouted to its new location.

Leenstra thanked Dykstra Engineering for engineering the project, and Butler Homes, who helped to move structure.

"Everyone has just been wonderful," she said.

The Leenstra's have been also working alongside the contractors to bring the home back up to par, and hope to be back in their house within the next month.

The "Move That House" fundraiser benefit is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 3 at Sheridan's Restaurant and Tavern in Andover Township, starting at 7:30pm. The cost is $20 per person, which will include a buffet, live music, dancing, and door prizes.
25 photo(s)
1/6/2012
Album ID: 1391210

The Andover Township Committee appointed their mayor, deputy mayor and members of other boards, commissions, and committees, at their reorganization meeting on Jan. 2.
Michael Lensak was elected by his peers, and sworn in as mayor. Committee member Gail Phoebus was nominated for, and elected as deputy mayor. Phoebus was not present at the event, and will be officially sworn in at another time.
Committee member Phil Boyce was sworn in for another term as committee member; Bob Smith, who was also unable to be present at the swearing in ceremony, will be sworn in at a later date for his committee seat.
"It's an honor to be sitting up here as mayor," said Lensak, who choked up when he thanked his father, Ed Lensczak, wife Lisa, and daughter Samantha for their support.
"It means a lot to me," he continued.
Lensak said he plans to look towards ways to increasing revenue for the township, and how things can be made more efficient.
He noted the importance of more businesses in order to keep taxes lower, and the opening of the Andover Animal Hospital, as well as the planned opening of a Dale's Market location at the former D'Angelo's location.
Lensak also said there will be a continued push for recycling, due to the increase in tipping fees, as well as the legal and environmental necessities for recycling.
"That [Dale's] will be the perfect addition to Andover," Lensak said.
During the public portion of the meeting, two residents spoke out with concerns about a resolution on the consent agenda, for an appointment of Darren Dickinson, Supervisor of Public Works, with an additional title of Buildings and Grounds and Special Projects Supervisor.
Vita Thompson, Administrator/Municipal Clerk said she asked Dickinson to take on the additional duties. Extra compensation for the position of $12,000 a year was proposed. Dickinson would handle water testing for all township facilities, and maintenance of all municipal buildings and their grounds. The item was pulled for further discussion.

Andover Township Police Patrolmen Brian Kithcart, and Ed Diklich met with the Greater Andover Senior Citizens Club on Dec. 19, to provide them with tips on safety, protecting themselves against fraud, and, general information.

Topics included being alert to particular types of scams, the purpose of Andover Township's Reverse 9-1-1 system, and how to be ready for emergency situations.

"Times are tough for everyone, there is a lot of theft, and, people try to get the best of you," said Diklich.

The officers told the seniors to keep their homes and cars locked, and, be aware of their surroundings. They suggested ways for the club members to keep their checkbooks, and other valuables safe.

In dealing with incessant calls for donations, the officers explained the purpose of the Do Not Call Registry, suggesting residents to register annually. Kithcart said residents can all the police if calls become an excessive nuisance, with many calls from the same group received on a daily basis. Police, in turn, will follow up with the organization making the calls.

"Definitely call us if it's a continuing problem," Kithcart reaffirmed.

Diklich said a good rule of thumb to determine if a call is valid is if the call comes from a local organization.

The officers told the seniors to be alert for calls from the Reverse 9-1-1 system, with a pre-recorded message from the township's emergency management officer. The system is used, for example, during times of a power outage, or, for boil water advisories.

"That will be supplying you with vital information," agreed Bob Smith, the club's vice president.

The officers provided seniors with other tips, such as avoiding watery areas in the cold weather, which can yield icy conditions, to keep a list on hand of medications in case of medical emergency, and to always report auto accidents to police, even for minor incidents.

Officers Diklich and Kithcart lastly told the seniors to call 9-1-1 for only emergency incidents, and, to report non-emergency issues in Andover Township to call: (973) 383-5544, and in Andover Borough (973) 383-1514.

Andover Township FOP Lodge #177 provided lunch for the Greater Andover Senior Citizens Club following the event.

Two county non-profit groups teamed up to bring the holidays to Sussex County residents in need.

Pass It Along and Project Self-Sufficiency opened the doors to their Holiday Toy Shop on Dec. 16, inviting eligible residents to shop for toys, books, sports equipment, jewelry, stuffed animals, clothing, and bedding.

County agencies referred approximately 648 residents to the toy shop, parents of about 1,470 children in need from across the county, with gifts for all age ranges, from babies to teens.

Residents streamed out of the door at Project Self-Sufficiency's Newton location, waiting for the opportunity to enter in to the toy store.

The store was open on Friday and Saturday, and, Deborah Berry-Toon, Project Self-Sufficiency's Executive Director, anticipated families not registered, or, who did not hear, to also come.

"Chances are we'll help more than 648 families," Berry-Toon said on Friday.

"The big part of the story is the generosity of the families and the corporations giving the gifts," Berry-Toon added.

The Community Education Center at Project Self-Sufficiency was transformed into the shop, with gift items piled high for parents to choose from, with area residents donating over 9,300 items. There was additionally a room filled with higher ticket items, like bicycles, a Kindle, an iPod, and a Coach purse, which the families could enter to win, on top of items at the toy shop.

While parents shopped, small children stayed and played in the Little Sprouts Early Learning Center.

Each parent shopping was eligible to take home three items per child, plus a stuffed animal, board game, or book. After checking out from the toy room, each parent was given a roll of wrapping paper, a gift of homemade gingerbread cookies, and, could pick up packs of new bedsheets, and pillows.

"This is what the community did, it does take a village," said Diane Taylor, President & CEO of Pass It Along.

Pass It Along ran the Holiday Toy Shop on their own for seven years before teaming up with Project Self-Sufficiency for the first time last year.

Taylor said Project Self-Suffiency offers the service component to county residents to bring lasting change.

She said she could not imagine the difficulty the families would experience without the toy shop.

"I just want to personally thank the whole community, they are generous givers," Taylor said.

WABC-TV Meteorologist Bill Evans at Sussex County Community College - Newton, NJ, 12/19/11

While many talk about weather when trying to strike up a conversation, WABC-TV Senior Meterologist Bill Evans has been telling tri-state residents about the latest weather happenings on Channel 7 Eyewitness News for the past 24 years.

"I absolutely love weather," Evans said when visiting a group of meteorology students, and members of the public at an appearance at Sussex County Community College on Dec. 19.

Evans joked with the audience that he is a "weather nerd", and said he rises daily at 2am to begin tracking the weather, then trek to Manhattan from his home in Connecticut to broadcast his findings and forecast on television, as well as the radio, the internet, WABC's website, and online.

Evans said he spends his afternoons book writing once he wraps his workday at 1pm, then spends time with his wife Dana and four children, and coaches baseball or football for his children.

A big storm, can keep Evans away from his family for 16 to 18 hours at a clip in the studio, or, he said, he is able to do some radio broadcasts at home during severe storms, in between snowball fights and sledding with his kids.

During his visit at Sussex County Community College, Evans toted copies of his latest book, 'Dry Ice' for sale, and locals who attended chatted with Evans as he signed their books.

He penned the book with Marianna Jameson, as well as 'Category 7: The Biggest Storm in History' and 'Frozen Fire'.

Evans' book, 'It's Raining Fish and Spiders', a childrens' book about weather, will be released in Spring 2012, and 'Blackmail Earth', a thriller tale of weather terrorism, is scheduled for June 2012.

Director of Communications at Sussex County Community College, and broadcast meteorologist and professor Tony Selimo, coordinated Evans' visit to the college and, helped to field audience questions during the event.

Evans said he considers his work that of a public servant.

"The thing about weather is you're helping people," Evans said. "I tell people what to wear, and, if a hurricane is coming."

Evans said he is "busier than he's ever been", in his 37th year of his career. After arriving daily to the WABC-TV studios, he also tapes updates for stations like WPLJ radio, digital cable, ESPN, Martha Stewart, and the New York Stock Exchange.

Evans told the audience he predicts a very wet winter ahead this year.

"There's a lot of moisture around here," said Evans, especially after the heavy rains in August and September.

Evans gave examples about the devastation of hurricanes in New York City history, including the complete destruction of Hog Island off of Long Island from a Category 2 Hurricane in 1893. It is the only case in history of an island removed completely by a storm.

Evans expressed his concern about the apathy when it comes to hurricanes in the northeast. He said a Category 1 hurricane in the north can equate to a the devastation caused by a Category 2 storm in the south.

"You can shovel 30" of snow, you can't shovel the ocean," Evans cautioned.
18 photo(s)
12/19/2011
Album ID: 1382355

Rosselli also runs a shuttle for Paws Crossed taking animals from kill shelters to other shelters and closer to forever homes. Terri Smith who works at the animal hospital played Mrs. Claus and Fred Smith was Santa. Locals brought in their cats, dogs and even a Lion Head rabbit called Angel for a picture with santa. Christmas and Holiday tunes were broadcast through amplifiers placed inside and out playing recordings as well as live choir performances by local school children. The entertainment and merchant tents spilled across the street to Krogh’s Restaurant & Brew Pub and Arthur’s St. Moritz.

The annual 2011 Weihnachtsmarkt event has one main intention --to raise funds for local charities in a unique and festive atmosphere. Volunteers, service providers, and sponsors worked in concert with 60 merchants to raise funds that will be distributed back to charitable community organizations.

Holiday shoppers had a plethora of presents to choose from to fulfill their holiday wish lists. Artisans set up shop to sell their handmade wares that ranged from pottery & baskets, to carved wooden décor and furniture. There was toys galore and even gifts for your pets.

Cheerful spirit and goodwill filled the air, making holiday shopping a pleasant and fun experience.

The blaze sent neighbors scrambling to call in the fire at 8:13am with the Newton Police, Fire Department, Office of Emergency Management, and First Aid Squad responding to the scene. Mutual aid response included assistance from the Andover Township, Branchville, Byram, and Hampton Fire Departments, and, the Lakeland, and Blue Ridge Rescue Squads. The Sussex County Sheriff's Office, and Fire Marshal were also on the scene.
The two family home is described by Kenneth Teets, Emergency Management Coordinator of Newton's Office of Emergency Management as "non-livable".
Teets said the American Red Cross, Sussex County Chapter, which was also on scene during the incident to provide support, is assisting the families to locate new living arrangements.
The fire is currently under investigation, and a portable electric heater is speculated as the cause.
6 photo(s)
12/1/2011
Album ID: 1371595

Newton's Town Crier William Joseph, asked the eager crowd on Spring Street at the kickoff of Newton's Holiday Parade on Saturday, November 26.
Throngs of cheers echoed in reply, as the parade headed down Spring Street, and then rounded the corner onto Moran Street.
Saturday's temperatures reached 64 degrees, and some parade attendees sported shorts. A holiday and festive feeling still prevailed, with the Toyland Theme chosen by the parade organizers, the Greater Newton Chamber of Commerce.
Dignitaries, businesses, and organizations were represented at the event, in addition to beauty queens, bands, fire departments, and even featured a special tap dance to "Let It Snow" by the students of the D'Marge Dance Studio. The grande finale was a visit from Old Saint Nick himself, who rode in atop Newton Fire Department's Tower Truck 804.
Children lined up to sit on Santa's lap at the end of the parade, as the Newton High School and Kittatinny Regional High School Marching Bands ended the festivities with a concert.
Mark your calendars for the Greater Newton Chamber of Commerce's Community Caroling event on Friday, December 16, beginning at 6:30pm. Carolers will meet in the square, and walk and sing from the gazebo, then along Spring Street, then finish off the evening with refreshments at the Fire Museum.
70 photo(s)
11/28/2011
Album ID: 1369144

Domino's Pizza celebrated its grand reopening at its new location on 244 Newton-Sparta Road, on the corner of Limecrest Road on Saturday, November 19.

Al Farace, franchisee, has owned the Domino's location for 16 years. The new store in Andover Township has become New Jersey's number one store, and, is a model location for other stores across the state.

Farace said Domino's was originally aimed at delivery, but his carry out business has increased, originally starting at 4 percent, then growing to 14 percent. In his new store, he said, it has climbed to 48 percent.

"The building is doing the advertising for me," said Farace, who transformed the former auto repair shop into a bright, welcoming establishment offering a variety of items on its menu.

"Over the past three years, Domino's has revamped the menu," Farace added. There are new types of sauce, cheese, and dough Domino's is using. Additionally, sandwiches and pastas joined the lineup. Last month, the artisan pizzas came on board.

"It's a very special pizza," said Farace. The three varieties, Italian Sausage & Pepper Trio, Spinach & Feta, and Tuscan Salami & Roasted Veggie selections, run at $7.99 a pizza.

The location employees handed out samples of Cheese Pizza, and the Spinach & Feta, as Max 106.3 joined in on the festivities, broadcasting live at the event.

On the day of the grand reopening, $1 of every order was donated to the Andover Township Fraternal Order of Police, and Fire Department. Andover's FOP is in the process of collecting toys for Toys for Tots, with a bin currently set up in the police station for donations, and, a Toys for Tots Drive, and dinner on December 9th at the Hillside Park Barn. The proceeds received from the Domino's Grand Reopening, also benefited the cause.
"We are dedicated to the Andover Township area, and are excited about the opportunity to serve its residents with a revamped store, and exceptional customer service," said Farace.
"What a great success story this is," Mayor Phil Boyce lauded, before cutting the ribbon. "We took a business in a lesser location, and moved it to a better location. He [Farace] also did a nice job taking an abandoned building and making it useful again."
Unlike other municipalities in the county, Boyce said Andover Township does not have a traditional Main Street downtown area, but compares this section of town to one. He said he observed both Pezzo Pizza, and, Domino's, two different types of restaurants, packed with customers, and is pleased.
Boyce also said Cumberland Farms will be remodeling soon, the old milk barn will be home to the Andover Animal Hospital, and Wawa will be opening a location on the other side of town on Route 206.

Edward McCracken Festival of Lights on Saturday, November 19 at Newton Medical Center.
"It's for the community," said Mark Avondoglio, who is the chairman of the Newton Medical Center Foundation.
C. Edward McCracken conceptualized the idea of beautifying and brightening the hospital atmosphere during the holiday season, after a stay himself at Newton Medical Center.
Donors purchase a strand of lights, or light a whole tree, and, the proceeds benefit the foundation.
Avondoglio said the event raises approximately $85,000 annually, and, will help defray costs for new MRI and catscan machines, a new educational conference center, and single rooms.
"It's so important for the community to come annd support events like this," said Bob McCracken, Chairman of the Newton Medical Center Advisory Board. "All monies raised stay in the community. Over the last 20 years, we have raised $1.2 million, with minimum expense ratios."
Dr. David Mattes, Director of the Emergency Department, who has been at Newton Medical Center since 1988, said, "It's always been a great hospital. They've always had good caring nurses, and doctors, and kept up with technology."
Mattes led the group in hitting the switch to illuminate the trees around the property.
"It [the event] gives everybody a chance to mingle with each other to support the hospital, and, it's probably the best fireworks you'll ever see."
Crowds packed the hospital lobby to warm up with coffee, and cocoa, and munch on hors d'oeuvres. Outdoors, carolers from the Pope John and Newton High Schools, Halsted Middle School, and Green Hills School sang, Mark Hontz played the bagpipes, there were games, holiday characters, and Santa in the children's tent, and, the massive fireworks display closed out the evening.
31 photo(s)
11/21/2011
Album ID: 1365829

Despite the aftereffects of the past weekend's snowstorm, the festivities still continued in Newton, although some neighboring towns canceled theirs', as well as postponed trick-or-treating until later in the week.
The Town of Newton, however, discouraged residents from trick-or-treating, and cautioned residents to proceed with care on the icy sidewalks and streets.
The parade traveled from Spring Street down Moran Street, and ended in the Central Plaza Parking Lot across from the municipal building. Locals enjoyed the festivities, and candies and beverages at the end of the parade, and there were costume contests and prizes for all age groups, from newborn to adult.
16 photo(s)
11/1/2011
Album ID: 1353301

Red Ribbon Week was observed from October 22 through October 30.
On Wednesday, October 26, the Sussex County Sheriff's Office visited the school with their narcotics dogs, and, Johnson gave a presentation to the students on October 27.
Johnson gave two separate presentations, one to the kindergarten through fifth graders, and a second to the sixth through eighth grade students.
With both presentations, he talked frankly with the children to discourage them to stay away from drugs, showing them photos of the effects on people who had taken drugs, and, how it changed the way the users looked.
"They'll [drugs] mess with your mind, and you won't make good decisions," Johnson said to both groups. "I knew I wasn't going to do drugs then, when I was sitting where you were."
For the younger set, Johnson showed them a "ways to say 'no'" video with known cartoon characters, and for the older students, talked with them about the tragedy of basketball player Len Bias, who was drafted to play for the Boston Celtics in 1986, but died two days later after trying cocaine once.
"How many people are in this room whose lives could be cut short because of drugs?" Johnson asked the students.
He talked honestly with the students about the dangers of tobacco, alcohol, Marijuana, Heroin, huffing, and more.
Students asked questions, and Johnson encouraged them if they know of a friend who is taking drugs, to not be afraid to speak to a trusted adult about it, or write an anonymous letter.
Dr. Maria Cleary, Chief School Administrator said, "We're very grateful to the Stanhope Police Department for partnering with us, and sharing with us this important message. We are really committed to getting the message out to our community."
4 photo(s)
10/31/2011
Album ID: 1352601

The scenery reflected two seasons, with the colorful fall leaves covered by snow. Downed trees, and power outages were accessories to the storm, with some schools still closed through Tuesday, and some locations anticipated without power through Friday. JCP&L reported 95 percent of their customers will have power restored by Thursday.
7 photo(s)
10/31/2011
Album ID: 1352563

The ebb and flow of regular clients and 'newbies' made the 5 hour event a success.
Men, women, and children came from as far away as Sparta and Green Township to have their haircut. Some people had read about the fundraiser or heard on the radio and made plans to stop by that day. Others were just passing by and and had a spur of the moment idea to participate in the cut-a-thon.
The salon raised $545 on Sunday, all of which will be donated to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization. Next year's goal will be to double that amount and the team has already started making plans.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and fundraisers are being held worldwide to support the cause. The Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization helps provide education and awareness, ensures and improves quality care, and helps further research to find the cure for breast cancer.
17 photo(s)
10/24/2011
Album ID: 1348679

Members of the Newton Police Department, First Aid Squad, Fire Department, Town Council, and the public gathered on Monday, September 26, for a dedication ceremony for the dedication of the Newton Police Department Memorial.

The idea of the memorial was conceptualized in 2010 by Officer Kenneth Teets, who approached Robert McCracken, owner/manager of Smith-McCracken Funeral Home.

"I thank Patrolman Teets to give our firm the opportunity to give back in a small way" said McCracken.

Newton Police Department's Chief Michael Richards, and Mayor Helen Le Frois presented McCracken with a special plaque in recognition of the donation of the memorial.

The memorial is emblazoned with, "in honor and in memory of those who have served."

It marks 100 years of service to the community, from 1910 to 2010.

"We share a bond with those who are serving, and, those who served before us," said Richards.

Special officer Donald Donofrio, who had worked with the police department, retired, and came back to work as a special officer, was also a speaker.

"Whether 100 years or tomorrow, the dangers our officers face is ever present," said Donofrio.

"Newton's police officers continue to work to hold the public trust," said Le Frois. Le Frois said there are 24 full time officers, 3 special officers, and 43 other employees that make up the department.

"We salute our current team of professionals who put their lives on the line to protect and serve," said Le Frois.

Teets, Sergeant Michael Monaco, and Detective Thomas Muller were all given honorable service awards and citation awards to be worn over their badges by Richards and Le Frois. Teets, Monaco, and Muller pored through record books, newspaper articles, and spoke with department retirees to compile historical chronicles about the department.

A lifetime resident, McCracken added, "We're one big family here in Newton, and all these gentlemen and ladies associated with the police department make it happen."
28 photo(s)
9/27/2011
Album ID: 1330443

Sussex County emergency personnel and residents assembled together on the grounds of Sussex County Community College for the 10th Anniversary 9/11 Ceremony.

The solemn ceremony takes place annually adjacent to the Sussex County 9/11 Memorial, which was dedicated in 2003.

The event is organized by 9/11 Committee Members, including Town of Newton Police Chief Michael Richards, and former Sussex County Freeholder Glen Vetrano.

Each year, a keynote speaker is chosen. Governor Chris Christie, and former Governor Donald T. Di Francesco, have been among the past speakers.

This year's speaker was Elvis Duran, Morning Show Host for Max 106.3 and Z100.

"I truly believe any one of you can come up and share your own 9/11 story," Duran said.

Duran told the crowd how on September 10, 2001, he was tired of playing the same songs on the radio and poking fun at celebrities.

On September 11 while on the air, he heard a report of a helicopter that flew into one of the Twin Towers. As time progressed, he was told it was a small plane, and then, a commercial jet.

"You didn't know what it was that happened," Duran recalled. "It took our breath away when we knew what happened."

Duran was surprised as the phones at Z100 continued to ring with reports, and listeners attempting to find out what happened.

When the first tower fell, Duran sent his staff home, and, he watched the second tower fall from the rear mirror of his car while driving in Jersey City.

"It didn't seem real," he said.

From there, he questioned how his show would function.

"We're a show that usually has fun, what do we do?" he asked.

On September 12, however, all 20 phone lines were ringing at 5:30am. Duran plugged in his earphones and began taking phone calls.

"September 12 is the day we'll remember with pride," Duran said.

Calls came in asking for help from Ground Zero, asking if someone could provide booties for the dogs because their paws were getting cut. Others asked for coffee, and Z100 provided it to workers during rescue efforts. Another caller said he was walking by Exit 14 of the Turnpike and wanted his family to know he was safe, and for his wife to know he was alive.

Originally questioning the purpose to his radio career, the help his show provided by broadcasting information, Duran said, "It was that day I decided radio was important to people. It changed lives."

Duran encouraged members of the crowd to share their own 9/11 stories.

The remembrance ceremony was rounded off with a military flyover, the raising and lowering of the colors, a wreath laying, music, and the release of doves.
67 photo(s)
9/11/2011
Album ID: 1319908

"It's a great day when the town gets together, and has fun."

"It's truly a reflection of what we were doing this weekend, and our hearts are breaking again," said Mayor Diana Kuncken at the re-dedication ceremony at the September 11 Memorial at Musconetcong Park in Stanhope Borough on Saturday, September 10.

The memorial was placed in the park on September 10, 2005, and its centerpiece is a beam from the World Trade Center. Stanhope was eligible to receive the artifact, due to the death of resident Joseph Vilardo, age 42, who was a senior vice president at Cantor Fitzgerald. He worked on the 104th Floor of One World Trade.

"Today we remember all those who perished that day, especially Joseph Villardo," Kuncken said. "We re-dedicate this memorial to the victims of 9/11 and Joseph Vilardo.

Vilardo's son, Matthew, sat in the front row during the service.

Reverend Hugh Matlack of the First Presbyterian Church of Stanhope gave the invocation, Father Nick Bozza of St. Michael Parish in Netcong, gave the closing prayer.

There were other local dignitaries who shared their reflection with the small group of residents, and members of the Stanhope Police and Fire Departments, and the Stanhope-Netcong American Legion Ambulance Corps, that stood by the memorial.

"In Sussex County, we stand shoulder to shoulder as a close knit community, and to join our fellow Americans," Stanhope Resident and Sussex County Freeholder Susan Zellman said.

Sheriff Mike Strada, who also spoke at the memorial service, said every person who wears a uniform faces a certain degree of risk.

"You don't realize how big that risk is until you see one of your friends in a flag draped casket," said Strada. "Those emergency responders on September 11, 2001, put on their uniforms, kissed their wife, and children goodbye, and went to work like every other day. I applaud all of you standing in front of me today for putting on your uniform, and serving the citizens of Stanhope and Sussex County."

The borough council laid a special wreath down by the memorial, and the Marine Corps Color Guard carried the colors, and honored the victims with a rifle salute.
27 photo(s)
9/10/2011
Album ID: 1319437

Sussex County fire departments, and even some from outside of the area, came to celebrate the newest addition to Newton’s fleet of fire trucks, at the Tower 804 Wet Down held on Saturday, September 3 at VFW Post 5360.

“I think it’s a proud day for Newton,” said Mayor Helen Le Frois. “It’s a culmination of two years worth of work. We’re glad to see everyone come out here to support it.”

Le Frois said a committee of about eight people convened regularly to coordinate the specifications for the truck to ensure it fit with the community.

“It is meant to work for Newton, and cut shorter for maneuverability. Newton’s streets are narrow, with buildings right on the street, and we needed make sure it could maneuver,” Le Frois added.

Assistant Fire Chief Brian Fox said the 95-foot ladder is comprised of five sections. It is the only tower truck in town, joining three engines, one rescue truck, and one brush truck. There are 65 volunteers involved with the department.

The only almost comparable truck in the county belongs to Sussex, which has a 100-foot straight ladder.

Tower 804 arrived to Newton on June 6, and after members were trained to operate it, was put into service the first week of July.

During the wet down festivities, members of the various fire departments and first aid squads, and members of the public, enjoyed the ceremonial wetting down of Tower 804 by the other departments, a barbecue, and music.
