  • In a age where alot of people wonder what unnatural chemicals may be in our food, it is refreshing to know that still today there are farmers that still grow food and raise aniamals naturally the way farming statrted. One of those farms is local to our area, High Breeze Farm just past both the West Milford NJ border and the Warwick NY border. The 160 acre farm, owned by the Demarest family from 1818 to 1860, when it was purchased by the Barrett family. The Barretts operated it continuously from 1860 to 1986 with very few changes to the original farming methods. read more in the upcoming article by Don Webb special to Struass News

  • Lusscroft farm state park held its open house this weekend. Over 400 people attended on Sunday. With the unpredictable weather going from warm to cold, it has extended the harvest season by a week or so. The sap was still flowing despite the icicles forming as it dripped into the buckets. Demonstrations were throughout the day on how to tap the trees, collect the sap and evaporate it into the sweet maple syrup we all love on pancakes.

  • How would you like to volunteer and learn the process from sap to syrup at Lusscroft Farm State Park, Beemerville N.J.? As stated by Frank Hennion, Maple Sugaring Manager at Lusscroft Farm, it's almost that time of year. With warmer days and cool nights we have the perfect weather. Hennion would like to get started on Saturday at 9;00AM at the Lusscroft Sugar House. Forest Service Volunteers along with others moved a lot of firewood from the manure shed to the sugar house and repaired knocked down sap lines from hurricane Sandy. The first couple of days require the most work. The old stove pipe in the sugar house needs to be replace, the evaporator set up,storage tanks cleaned and checking all the sap lines along with tapping.Volunteers are needed throughout the sugaring season to run daily operations (7days a week) until March.Hennion stated that they have some dedicated individuals that sacrifice a lot of personal time and hopes that others would be willing to give a little more time volunteering as well. On March 16th and 17th there will be the annual open house for the public to visit the sugar bushes, see how maple syrup is made and the sugar house and sell syrup made during the season. Last year over 500 visitors observed the operations and purchased local syrup. The revenue form the maple suagaring operation benefits the ongoing maintenance of the sugar house and supports the upkeep of the Lusscroft Farm State Park. Anyone willing to spend a long day and possibly an evening watching sap boil can contact Lusscroft Farms or show up on Saturday, february, 23rd at 9;00 AM. Have some fun gathering sap, watching the steam and meeting new people. No qualifications are needed. You will have to sign a volunteer form with the State Park so you will be covered by insurance. See you there.
