Monroe-Woodbury gains playoff berth despite loss to NFA 16-10

These are photographs taken by Don Beeler on Oct. 12. Monroe-Woodbury High School lost to Newburgh Free Academy in Newburgh that Firdau evening by a score of 16-10. Nonetheless, the Crusaders qualified to play in the Class AA semifinals on Oct. 27.
This Friday evening, the 6-1 Crusaders take on the 5-2 Minisink Valley Warriors at home in Central Valley.
Minisink Valley also has qualified for the playoffs and will face Pine Bush in the other Class AA semifinal Oct. 27 at Dietz Stadium in Kingston.
The Crusaders will face the winner of Friday’s game between Warwick and Washingtonville in the Class AA semifinals next Saturday at Faller Field in Middletown.
Here are some statistics from last Friday’s contest:
Passing
Kevin Carr: Completed 4 of 15 passes for 61 yards. He also was intercepted once.
Rushing
Team: 32 rushing plays for a total of 161 yards
Kevin Carr: 21 carries for 103 yards; his longest run went for 35 yards.
Michael Gavin: One carry for 10 yards
Mark Tooma: 10 carries for 48 yards, including one 40 carry.
Receiving
Team: Four receptions for 63 yards.
Mark Tooma: One catch for 10 yards.
Justin Kaffenberger: Three catches for 51 yards.
Scoring
Quarterback Kevin Carr scored six points with his rushing touchdown.
Kicker Matt Valentini totaled four points: three on an 18-yard field goal and one following Carr’s touchdown.

M-W students decorate windows in Monroe for Halloween

These are photographs taken by Nancy Kriz. By popular request, Monroe-Woodbury High School students and teachers have again volunteered to paint storefront windows in fun and spooky Halloween themes. On Oct. 12 and 13, students were seen with paint buckets and brushes bringing their cute and ghoulish visions to life.
“A lot of work goes into this besides the two days that are devoted to painting,” wrote Village Mayor James Purcell in a note to residents. “Next time you ride through the village take a moment to admire the efforts of the student artists in our community.”

The 6-0 Monroe-Woodbury Crusades travel to Newburgh Friday evening to face 4-2 Newburgh Free Academy in a conference game.
Monroe-Woodbury comes off a 27-14 homecoming victory against Kingston Tigers last Friday. The NFA Goldbacks hope to bounce back from their 41-0 loss to Pine Bush.
Pine Bush fell 24-7 to the Crusaders on Sept. 28.
By the numbers
Offense: Here are some statistics from last Friday’s game:
Kevin Carr completed 9 of 18 passes for 108 yards and one touchdown.
Justin Kaffenberger caught seven of those passes, including the touchdown, for a total of 101 yards.
The offense rushed for 286 yards on 45 carries. Carr totaled 123 yards and scored three times; Mark Tooma carried 16 times for 97 and Kaffenberger had five carries for 66.
Defense: The Crusader defense held the Kingston Tigers to 19 yards on the ground on 19 carries. Kingston quarterback Pat Dorrian, a junior like Carr, completed 21 of 36 passes for 205 yards and one touchdown.
The defense registered 55 tackles, including 30 solo stops. The Crusaders also had five quarterback sacks - three by Kenny Fee and two by Rob Kelly. The total tackles by player were:

Through its four victories, Monroe-Woodbury has scored an average of 36 points per game (144 total points) while holding their opponents to less than 13 points per contest (49 total points allowed).
The Monroe-Woodbury Crusaders face Pine Bush at home Friday evening in Central Valley in a contest of undefeated varsity football programs.

Monroe-Woodbury defeat Stepinac 35-7 in White Plains on 09/08/12

These are Don Beeler's photographs from the Monroe-Woodbury varsity football team's 35-7 victory over Stepinac last Saturday evening in White Plains. The Crusaders’ victory included a swarming defense that limited Stepinac, last year’s AAA Division finalist, to 179 offensive yards and a lone touchdown that came in the game’s waning moments. On offense, quarterback Kevin Carr passed for 133 yards, including a scoring pass to Justin Kaffenberger, then added 79 more yards on the ground. At game’s end, Kaffenberger accounted for 78 yards on six catches. Meanwhile, Mark Tooma rushed for 98 yards and two scores, including a 70-yard punt return. The team faces the Warwick Valley Wildcats this Friday night in Warwick.

These are photographer Don Beeler's images from the M-W varsity football team's season opening victory over Binghamton High School on Aug. 31 at home in Central Valley. Running back Mark Tooma scored three times, twice behind M-W’s formidable offensive line and then on long kickoff return. Quarterback Kevin Carr ran for more than 200 yards and a touchdown and passed for another 102 yards and a score to Kenny Fee. Monroe-Woodbury plays Saturday night in White Plains again Archbishop Stepinac High School, for whom head Coach Bernie Connolly played and coached.
