Veteran's Day Display-Newton, NJ,11/9/09

  • They are varying faces from different eras with some things in common. They fought for our country and hail from Sussex County. "These are everyday people from all walks of life and we have them to thank for our liberties," said Connie Martinez of the Newton Post Office. Martinez has spearheaded efforts to honor our soldiers serving overseas over the last five years and has started a new annual tradition for the post office. In conjunction with Veteran's Day, Martinez asked locals to submit pictures of area veterans. She created two large displays lined with photographs and accolades in honor and memory of Sussex County's veterans. She interspersed the photographs with prose, memorabilia, flags and awards. The awards on display belong to her son Jason, who recently returned from active duty and is now with the National Guard. Martinez plans to keep the display up for two months annually, and to add photos annually. "It's important to be aware that there's a mother, father, brother or sister walking among us, who we could be passing on the street," she said. "They could be the reason why we're here." In addition, the employees of the post office have begun their 2009 "Treats for Troops" campaign. Through December 9, they will be collecting items including cards, candy, hand-held games, books, hot chocolate and hot cider packs and travel-size toiletries. Additional drives for items for the troops are done throughout the year. At the post office there is also the "Wall of Honor", which are submitted photos of those currently serving. In summing up all of her efforts in honoring and remembering the troops, Martinez quotes British Statesman George Canning, "When our perils are past, shall our gratitude sleep?"

  • On Saturday, Oct. 31, a light rain and intermittent showers did not deter a large number of ghosts, goblins and witches along with an assortment of movie, cartoon and even more creative characters from assembling outside Lewis Park. At 4 p.m. the participants, some shielded by umbrellas, stepped off and headed down Main St. to Railroad Green.
