Local Pro Racer George Ryan of Vernon is shown airborne during Sunday’s professional racing circuit held at Mountain Creek. Ryan placed 7th in a field of the 55 racers in the men’s professional division. Last weekend the Mountain Creek Spring Classic brought in racers from as far away as New Zealand with hundreds of racers in the various competitions.

The Sparta Spartans defeated the Wayne Valley Indians in high school girls varsity lacrosse on Thursday, May 16, 2013. The final score was 18-8. The Lady Spartans improved their record to 17-1-0. The game played at Sparta High School was the first round of the New Jersey Interschoolastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) lacrosse tournament. The win allowed Sparta to advance to the second round of the quarter finals.

Winning team leader Chef Christian Cortes, an employee at Sodexo’s Hillsboro School District facilities brought together winning Vernon Township High School students Cassidy Braico, Jenn Redfern, Jess Rueger, and Ashley Weigel. Their winning menu consisted of Cheesy Cajun turkey potato balls, Stuffed Toquitos rolls made with freshly made sofrito sauce and a blend of fresh veggies and turkey. The meal was topped off with stuffed strawberries for dessert. According to VTHS Chef and Manager Carla Brandt, they received a plaque and the title of “Master of the Culinary Throwdown.”

When the parking lot at the Vernon PAL is filled to capacity you can be sure something good is going on. Last Wednesday the annual Vernon PAL Health & Fitness Fair really packed them in. Presented by the Vernon PAL Youth Leadership and the Vernon Township High School Advanced Physical Education Class, the evening was quite a success with demonstrations including CPR and karate. There were many tables and displays offering important information about various health issues and helpful tips to assist residents in making good life style choices.
