Eastern coyote in Monroe area
36 photos
for sale
On the prowl: These are photographs taken by Rich Rizzi of what appears to be a female Eastern coyote that's been seen recently prowling walking through the backyards of homes in the vicinity of the Monroe Country Club off Still Road. The Eastern coyote, which has been gradually making its way south from Canada for the past couple of decades, is now being seen elsewhere in Monroe and other parts of southern Orange County. It weighs 30-50 pounds, which is about a third larger than the Western coyote. The Eastern coyote’s size has been attributed to the fact that it carries wolf DNA, probably because it cross-bred with wolves as it crossed Canada from out West. In general, the Eastern coyote isn’t dangerous to humans, but it has been known to eat small dogs and cats. These photos were taken on two separate occasions. The first shows the coyote walking through Rizzi's backyard. The later photos show deer in flight days later as they are stalked by what appears to be the same coyote.
