  • These are photographs contributed to The Photo News. Area residents participated in a flag ceremony at Citifield in Flushing on June 16 when the Mets hosted the 10th Annual Greek Night. Monroe resident Tina Anastos, who is on the board of The Greek Children’s Fund, which raises and distributes funds for children dealing with life-threatening diseases for over 30 years, coordinated their participation. Anastos is also a member of the group’s organizing committee for Greek Night at Citifield. The Greek Children’s Fund coordinates a variety of activities for Greek Heritage Night including more than 100 Greek dancers, a bouzouki player, Greek music during the game and the evening’s color guard and flag ceremony. Because Anastos is involved locally with the Monroe Girl and Boy Scouts, she invited Monroe Cub Scout Pack 340, Boy Scout Troop 340, Monroe Cadette Troop 502 and Woodbury Cadette Troop 170 to participate in the opening flag ceremony, which also included scouts from the tri-state area.

Monroe Town DPW rescues fawn

  • These are Bob Picinotti's photographs, taken last Friday on Sandra Lane in Monroe. Last Friday, the highway department received a call that a fawn had fallen into a storm drain on Sandra Lane. The fawn’s rescue wasn’t anything new to the Town's DPW, according to Highway Superintendent Anthony Rizzo, as over the years the crew has rescued many cats, deer and other creatures who found themselves in perilous dilemmas. In fact, this was the third deer rescue this year. Often times, the highway department is called upon to remove dead or severely injured animals from the roadways, so to help return a live animal to its natural habitat is gratifying. “It is a feel good moment, we get that way in every situation we do,” he said. “I think rewarding is a better word. Our highway department is here to assist the fire district in any way we can. I’ve been involved in volunteer fire and rescue for 30 years. It’s good to pull someone or something alive out of anything, anytime. When we have something alive, whether animal or human, it makes our job a little more rewarding.”
