Veteran's Day Display-Newton, NJ,11/9/09

  • They are varying faces from different eras with some things in common. They fought for our country and hail from Sussex County. "These are everyday people from all walks of life and we have them to thank for our liberties," said Connie Martinez of the Newton Post Office. Martinez has spearheaded efforts to honor our soldiers serving overseas over the last five years and has started a new annual tradition for the post office. In conjunction with Veteran's Day, Martinez asked locals to submit pictures of area veterans. She created two large displays lined with photographs and accolades in honor and memory of Sussex County's veterans. She interspersed the photographs with prose, memorabilia, flags and awards. The awards on display belong to her son Jason, who recently returned from active duty and is now with the National Guard. Martinez plans to keep the display up for two months annually, and to add photos annually. "It's important to be aware that there's a mother, father, brother or sister walking among us, who we could be passing on the street," she said. "They could be the reason why we're here." In addition, the employees of the post office have begun their 2009 "Treats for Troops" campaign. Through December 9, they will be collecting items including cards, candy, hand-held games, books, hot chocolate and hot cider packs and travel-size toiletries. Additional drives for items for the troops are done throughout the year. At the post office there is also the "Wall of Honor", which are submitted photos of those currently serving. In summing up all of her efforts in honoring and remembering the troops, Martinez quotes British Statesman George Canning, "When our perils are past, shall our gratitude sleep?"

  • The lights were back on at 144 Spring Street for a V.I.P. Event celebration, marking the grand re-opening of JC's Grill House. The establishment, which had closed because of a legal entanglement over their liquor license with their landlord, is looking at it as a new beginning. "We've got a fresh start with a fresh look and fresh staff," said co-owner Lynn Butler. "It's been a long journey at this point and we're ready to go." Of the former staff, six of the original staff have returned and there are 25 new employees. Co-owner Joseph Cotton concurred with the fresh start idea, with new TV's in the bar, new decor and some of the rooms newly painted. Kellie Economou, an interior designer who worked with JC's, said the new look gives the restaurant a feel of a true steakhouse. Sam Platt, Director of Marketing of Robin Lennon Inner Designs, a business across the street said, "JC's is back. It's been a period which we've missed them, their food and the light on across the street." The business officially reopened to the public November 10. They are open daily 11:30am-9:30pm Monday through Thursday, Saturdays 11:30am-10:30pm and Sundays 12-9:00pm. For more information see their website: jcsgrillhouse.com.
